Died, at the home of her daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Kaufman, early Tuesday morning,
January 19, Maria Hilgendorf, (nee Hartke) age 71 years, 11 months and 5 days.
Mrs. Hilgendorf was born February 14, 1854, at Addison, Ill., from there she
came with her parents to the vicinity of Buckley. In 1873 she was married to
John Hilgendorf, who passed away less than a year ago. Since then she spent most
of her time with her daughter, Mrs. Wm. Kaufman, who took tender care of her
unto her end. She has been ailing ever since her husband died. She was ready
to follow her husband to the Far Beyond. She was a true member of the St. Johns
church. Funeral services were held at the church on Thursday at 2 p.m. Interment
at the German cemetery beside her husband. She was the mother of ten children,
seven of whom are still living. Three sons, John and Fred of Michigan; William
of Buckley; four daughters, Mrs. F. Steinman of Michigan; Mrs. H. Wagner of Loda;
Mrs. Wm. Kaufman and Mrs. George Kaufman of Buckley, and a number of grand and
great grand children.
She was buried about 22 Jan 1926 in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Buckley,
Illinois.4 Section A, Row
21A, Plot 24 Mary HARTKE and Johann William HILGENDORF were married in 1873.11 There is one too many children
listed in this family. It would seem that either Rosie or Else is actually named
Martha or Minna, but further research will be needed to determine which is which.
This information is gleaned from the obituaray of William Hilgendorf, which
gives the names of all his siblings both surviving and predeceasing him. Johann William HILGENDORF (son of Daniel Friedrich HILGENDORF
and Maria Dorothea Henrietta DREWS) was born on 4 Feb 1854 in Rakow, Pommerania,
Germany.11,12 He died on 23 Apr 1925 in Buckley, Iroquois County,

Died at his home in Buckley, Thursday, April 23, 1925, John Hilgendorf, aged
71 years, 2 months and 17 days. Mr. Hilgendorf was born in Germany February 4,
1854. When 8 years of age he came, with his parents, to America. They lived four
years in the vicinity of Thornton, Ill. In 1866, they moved on a farm near Buckley.
He was married to Miss (Mary) Hartke in 1873. To this union seven children were
born: three sons and four daughters, all of whom survive. He leaves to mourn
his widow, his children, 39 grandchildren and 5 great grand children. Mr. Hilgendorf
retired from farming some time ago and lived in Buckley. He was a member of the
German church and was well and favorably known in and around Buckley. He owns
a farm south of town and also some real estate in Michigan, where two of his
sons are farming. Funeral services were held at the St. John church, Sunday,
April 26, at 2 p.m. May he rest in peace.
He was buried on 26 Apr 1925 in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Buckley, Illinois.4,11
