Obituaries
Following is an obituary, which sounds as if it might have been in the bulletin
of St. John's Lutheran Church rather than in a newspaper.
OBITUARY OF
MR. FRED HILGENDORF
Another of our older members has passed to his eternal
reward, Mr. Frederick Hilgendorf. He was born December 27, 1857, at Rakow in Pommerania,
Germany. At the age of four years, he came with his parents to this country and lived
at Thornton, Illinois. In 1868, the family moved on a farm near Buckley and affiliated
with our congregation. The deceased was a member of the first class confirmed in
our church and he died in the faith he then confessed.
In 1878, he was united
in marriage to Miss Sophia Krumwiede, who on the 13th of June, 1932, preceded him
in death. They lived a happy married life for over 50 years and were privileged to
see all their children grow to manhood and womanhood. Two married daughters, Mrs.
Marie Threesfeld and Mrs,. Emma Steinmann, passed before them into eternity. It was
to them a pleasure to be privileged to give two of their sons to the Lord to serve
Him in the holy ministry.
The deceased father, as long as he was able to work,
was engaged in farming. Twenty years ago, he retired from farm life to spend his
remaining days in this village. The Lord had blessed him with good health till the
last year. The infirmaties of old age caused him at times much inconvenience. Since
the daparture of his wife, he lived with his children who in love and kindness cared
for him in his declining days and afforded him all possible comfort. Well prepared
for a blessed end and comforted with God's Word, he fell asleep last Saturday evening
and is now at home with the Savior as he had desired.
The deceased father was
a sincere Christian and a respectable citizen. He loved to hear the Word of God and
to take part in the works of the church. To the very last hour, he was privileged
to hear the saving truth. Confessing his trust and hope in Christ, he died a peaceful
death. The time of his earthly life numbers 77 years, 5 months and 18 days. His departure
is mourned by his seven sons, three daughters, forty-eight grandchildren, 14 great
grandchildren and many other relatives and friends. May he rest in peace.
The source of this obituary is probably a bulletin of St. John's Lutheran Church,
rather than a newspaper. The type-style and wording both lend to this impression.
MRS. FRED HILGENDORF LAID TO REST ON FRIDAY
Funeral services
for Mrs. Fred Hilgendorf, which were held on Friday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at
the home and at 2:30 o'clock at St. John's Lutheran church, were very largely attended.
Rev. C. Braeunig, pastor St. John's Lutheran church, officiated and brought comfort
to the sorrowing family. Music was furnished by the male choir.
Commitment took
place in St. John's cemetery following the church obsequies. The pallbearers were
grandsons of the deceased and were namely, Fred and Theodore Theesfeldt (sic), Robert
and Lester Ronna, Myron King and Clifford Hilgendorf. The beautiful flowers were
carried by the following granddaughters of Mrs. Hilgendorf: Sophia, Mary, Laura,
and Verna Hilgendorf.
Among those from a distance who attended the services
were Rev. Theo. Hilgendorf and wife, of Zap, N.D.; Rev. Carl H. Hilgendorf and family,
of Geneseo; Fred Hilgendorf and family, of Almond, Wis.'; Charles Theesfeldt (sic)
and family, of Ashkum; Ed. Steinman, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Theesfeldt (sic), Mrs. Barney
Bartell, of Cassopolis, Mich., and William Theesfeldt (sic), of Donovan.
The following obituary, in all probability from The Record, Paxton, Illinois, gives
further information.
