would cause the numeral 1 to be read as 7.) Paten: Margaretha Adelheid Schoh

Departed
Another highly respected and esteemed lady has been called to the home above.
Mrs. H.C. Krumwiede departed from this life last Monday morning at 6 o'clock.
Her sudden, unexpected death was a painful surprise to everyone. The deceased
attended the funeral of the late Mrs. Scherkenbach last Thursday, and appeared
to be in her usual health. During the evening of that day she complained of not
feeling well and retired early, hoping to feel better on the morrow. But her
hopes were not fulfilled. When it was noticed that the disease would not give
way to the treatment, a physician was called. He pronounced a case of la-grippe.
The patient grew rapidly worse and on Sunday (unreadable) to be sinking. Yet,
hopes for her ultimate recovery were entertained. She was conscious up to about
six hours before her death. At the break of day, her heart failed and the soul
took its flight to the realms beyond. Only a few of the nearest relatives knew
that she was sick. The community was so shocked by the announcement of her sudden
taking off that it seemed incredible to believe. She was another of those meek,
modest, unassuming natures, an exceptionally industrious woman. She was of retiring
habit, and not much seen in society. She was a kind and dutiful wife and mother,
sacrificing all for the health and comfort of her loved ones. 'Tis sad, extremely
so, that she had to leave her family so soon.
Mrs. Carolina (sic) Krumwiede, nee Schoh, was born May 11, 1860, at Settrup,
Anet Fuerstenau, Hanover. At the age of seventeen she, in company with her sister,
Mrs. Sprehe and her husband, emigrated to this country. After a brief stay in
New York they came west and located here. In the winter of 1884 the deceased
was united in marriage to Mr. H. C. Krumwiede. The union was blessed with eight
children, the oldest child being about 14 years old, the youngest 3 years.
The funeral took place last Thursday afternoon from the Lutheran church. Though
the highways were in so bad a condition that it was a difficult task to travel
over them, a very large congregation of sorrowful, sympathizing friends were
present. Messrs. Knueppel, Luhrsen, Sachtjehn, Kottke, Jaster and Ahlfeld carried
the remains to her last resting place. May she rest in peace till the day of
resurrection. The husband and children are assured of the deep sympathy of the
entire community.
Iroquois County Times
Mrs. H.C. Krumweide (sic) was taken with la grippe last Thursday evening and
a complication of pneumonia and heart failure also set in. All that could be
done was done but the efforts seemed of no avail. She died Monday morning of
this week and was buried on Thursday. Funeral services were held at the Lutheran
church by Rev. Glanken. The deceased leaves several samll children. It is a very
sad affair and the citizens all sympathize with the family.
She was buried about 24 Mar 1899 in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Buckley,
Illinois.6 Section A, Row
13A, Plot 57, to the right of her niece and Henry C. Krumwiede's second wife,
Minna Sprehe Krumwiede. The stone is an old, white obelisk that is now, in 1996,
almost unreadable. The family should do something to have it restored and sealed
or a brass plate placed at the foot of the stone with the original text while
there still are those alive who know what the stone says in full. "Karoline
E, wife of Heinrich C Krumwiede, May 11 1860 - Mar 20 1899." She immigrated
age 17.8 Karoline's granddaughter,
Verna Krumwiede Heimlich, told me on Sept. 3, 1995, that the correct spelling
of this surname is SCHO or SHO. Other spellings discovered during research are
SCHOCH and SCHOUGH. Anna Elizabeth "Karoline" SCHOH and Henry Charles KRUMWIEDE
were married on 24 Feb 1884 in Iroquois County, Illinois.8,21,22 The church record reads: "Heinrich Krumwiede to
Anna Elizabeth Caroline Schoh 24 Feb. Witnesses to the ceremony were: August
Krumwiede, Louis Krumwiede, Emma Krumwiede, Lina Giertz." Also recorded
as County Record # 135
Henry Charles

was born on 5 Nov 1862 in Henry, McHenry County, Illinois. He was

15 Nov 1895 - Quite a number of friends gathered at Henry C. Krumwiede's house
last Tuesday evening, to celebrate his 33d birthday. All present enjoyed themselves
very much. Mr. Krumwiede is a pleasant, industrious gentleman. The Chronicle
congratulates. Hope you will live to celebrate your 100th birth day.
22 Nov 1895 - Messrs. H.C. Krumwiede and Paul Jaster went on a sporting trip
one day last week. They went to Melvin to sell a horse. After this part of the
business was transacted, they rode to Melvin and "took in the town."
18 Dec 1895 - Mr. Wendt shelled corn Thursday and H.C. Krumwiede shelled Tuesday.
H.C. Krumwiede had storm doors and vestibules built by Louis Krumwiede to keep
out the cold and accommodate the public. (This is one of several instances in
which there is a suggestion that Henry Charles Krumwiede was a business owner.
Given that the same issue mentions that the Columbia has a new vestibule, one
wonders if "Willie's" cousins had an interest in the inn, grandpa ordered
the vestibules built and either cousin Louis or Uncle Louis built them.)

past about the middle initial "C" in Henry's name. Some told me it
stood for Charles, but others said it stood for Conrad. With the purchase of
a transcription of birth records from Iroquois County, the mystery was solved.
When Henry registered the births of his children, he used his own full name in
the registry, and gave his name as Henry Charles.) Anna Elizabeth "Karoline"

BUCKLEY --Mr. Emil Krumwiede, apparently somewhat improved from a serious condition
of illness, suddenly collapsed Wednesday morning at 1:30 o'clock. That was a
keen blow to his many friends and relatives. The funeral services were held Sunday
afternoon at St. John's church. A very large congregation of grief-stricken relatives

H.C. Krumwiede. He attained an age of 53 years. Mr. Krumwiede leaves to mourn
his loss his bereaved widow, one son, one daughter, besides many other relatives.
Emil Krumwiede was one of the quiet in the land, but a man with a big heart and
a tender, conscientious soul. Always friendly, always accommodating his friends
were numberless. Everybody liked Emil Krumwiede. He will truly be missed in the
family and fraternal circles. A very long concourse of automobiles followed the
remains to the last resting place.

Probably Dec. 1919 -- Mirth and happiness reigned supreme in the home of Mr.
and Mrs. H.C. Krumwiede Friday night. Their son Adolph returned from the European
battlefields, returned healthy and happy. A big crowd met at this reception to
join in the great feast. The yung soldier of course, had much to tell, and though
the party remained together until a late hour, yet he could not tell near all
he saw and heard. Mr. and Mrs. Krumwiede outdid themselves in extending hospitalities.
A reunion of friends and relatives could not be more cordial than was that. All
are glad that adolph is back with his family.
