The first place I visited in Oregon besides downtown Portland was the 
Columbia River Gorge.  I visited without Susan, who was busy that day, 
and I drove until I found Multnomah Falls, a 625' waterfall with a 
trail up to the top.  I climbed the trail in about an hour and marveled 
at the view from the top of the falls.  After returning to the bottom, 
I visited the office of the National Park there, and got information on 
other trails in the Gorge so Susan and I could return on the morning 
that she had free.  I saw a notation on one of the maps about a place 
called Sherrard's point on Larch Mountain, about 15 miles by car from 
the Gorge, where you could see Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Ranier, Mt. Adams, 
Mt. Hood, and Mt. Jackson.  Sounded good, so I proceeded that way.  On 
the drive, I passed through fog and clouds, and upon arrival, I found 
the trail to the lookout, a climb of 750' in 1.25 miles.  Off I went, 
and when I arrived at the top, I saw nothing but clouds.  I waited for 
a while, but the weather didn't clear, so I decided to return to the 
car.  When I reached the parking lot, the sun popped out, and I could 
get a glimpse of Mt. Hood.  So I raced back up to the lookout and was 
able to almost reach out and touch Mt. Hood.  Unfortunately, I forgot 
to take my camera!  So I returned to the hotel in Portland and related 
my trip to Susan.
