FUNERAL FOR MR. CARTER SUNDAY
The funeral for Jesse Henry Carter, 86 years old,
who died at his home in this city Saturday morning, was held at 11 o'clock Sunday morning
at the Salt River church, 10 miles south of Mexico. The Rev. Egan Gerndon of near
Centralia, conducted the service. Burial was made in the cemetery adjoining the church.
Mr. Carter was born in Nichols County, Kentucky, and when a young man, came to this
county and settled on a farm southwest of here. He lived there until about four years ago
when he came to Mexico. His wife who was Miss Martha Maffett, died several years ago.
Mr. Carter is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Effie Thomas, Gillette Wyo., Mrs. Tom
Squires, of near Centralia and Mrs. Ed Beatty of near Mexico. He also leaves twelve
grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Deceased was known to his friends as "Uncle Jesse" and he was a lovable
character, kindly and friendly to everyone. His many friends will regret to know his
death.

Will of J. H. Carter
I, J. H. Carter, of Audrain County, Missouri, being mindful that life is uncertain do
make and publish this my last will and testament as follows:
First - I give and devise to my beloved, wife, Martha A. Carter, all of my property of
every kind and wheresoever situated both real estate and personal property of every kind
to have and to hold and to use with the power to sell, mortgage or convery as she may
think best after the payment of all my just debts and funeral expenses and costs of
setttling my estate. If my said wife should die owning any of the property given her by
this my last will, which she has not used or disposed of, it is my will that said
remainder of my estate be divided by her equally among our five children, Effie J. Dalby,
Wenona Squires, Charlotta Thomas, Maude Beatty and Claude C. Carter, and the colored
woman, Rose Carter, which we have raised from childhood. I wish her to have an equal share
with our children because of her faithful services to our family. If any of my said
children should die before my wife, leaving no descendants, then his or her share in said
remainder shall be divided among the remaining children. If said Rose Carter should die
before my wife, then she is to have no part in said remainder.
Second - I hereby appoint my wife, Martha A. Carter, executrix of my estate and request
that she be permitted to act without bond. If possible I request that my estate by closed
without any administration.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name at Mexico, Mo. This November
22nd, 1910.

Mrs. Jesse H. Carter Dies Wed.
Mrs. Jesse Carter, 78 years of age, died at her home near Gant, Wednesday morning about
7 o'clock, from a stroke of paralysis. She was ill only a short time, having been stricken
with paralysis about 2 o'clock on Tuesday morning.
The funeral will be held at Salt River Church, Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The
Rev. David Mayes of Centralia will officiate. The body will be buried in Salt River
Cemetery.
Mrs. Carter was the wife of Jesse Carter, one of the most prominent citizens of the
county. She was a beautiful Christian character and a member of the Christian church for
many years. Her death will sadden the hearts of not only her close neighbors, but all who
knew her.
Besides a husband, she is survived by the following children: Mesdames T. Squires, Ed
Beatty, Effie Dalby and John Thomas, all of the Gant neighborhood and C. C. Carter of Los
Angeles, Calif.
The Ledger joins many friends in extending sympathy to the bereaved.

Rose Sears d 23 Aug 1927 aged 65 yrs.
This was right next to Jesse H. and Martha A. Carter. The stones were fairly new, with
the same design. Rose Sears was just a little smaller. Thought there might be a
connection.
This next one was on the other side of your Carters. One tall stone with J.N. Carter on
the east side and Martha J. Carter on the west side. Didn't say how related. One of the
census you sent in your first posting, had J.N. Carter living with Jesse Carter and was a
brother. My feeling is this is
Jesse's brother and mother???

Thomas Dalby Dead
Thomas Dalby, a farmer living nine miles west of this city, died
Wednesday, Feb. 8th, at his home, of consumption. The deceased was a son of Philip Dalbey
and a son-in-law of J.H. Carter. He had been an invalid for about 3 years. A wife and
several small children mourn his loss.

Hollis Dalby dies in Wyoming
Hollis Dalby, 20 years old, died of influenza at this home in Wyoming
and his body was brought to the McPheeters undertaking parlors in Mexico Monday. The
funeral services were held at the Salt River church at 3 o'clock Monday afternoon. He
leaves his mother and three brothers and sisters. He was born and reared in Johnson County
and later moved to Wyoming.

Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Dalby who lately moved to Texas for the benefit of Mr.
Dalbey's health, lost their little baby last week. The remains were buried in the Salt
River graveyard.
