Death of Mrs. Sarah Jane Bradley.

Mrs. Sarah Jane Bradley died Wednesday morning at 11 o'clock of typhoid pnuemonia. Her death occurred at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. J. R. Pollard, three miles southeast of Mexico.
Mrs. Bradley was 66 years of age and had resided in Audrain county for fifty-five years. Her earlier life wes passed in Virginia, her birthplace. She had been married for forty-nine years and was the mother of eight children, four of whom are living and were at her bedside at the time of her death. They are James S., Mrs. J. R. Pollard, Royal and David. Her husband Wm. T., died Sept. 21, 1891.
Her remains were interred last Thursday. Rev. Rogers conducting the services at the grave. No services was held, it being postponed for several weeks

Death of a Venerable Citizen

W. T. Bradley, was one of the oldest citizens of Audrain, died at his home in this city Sunday night of kidney affection.

Mr Bradley was a native of Virginia, coming to the state when eighteen years of age. Some five years later he married Miss Sallie Jesse, who with five children, W. T. Jr., J. S., J. R., D. L., and Mrs Jas. Pollard, survive him. W. T. Bradley is merchandizing at Eureka Springs. The remainder of the children live in Audrain. There are five children dead.Mr. Bradley came to Audrain the year following the organization of the county and resided here the remainder of his life. He was a member of the Baptist church and a kind hearted, good man. Funeral services took place at the Promenade street Baptist church at 10:00 AM Tuesday.

One of the tragic events of the late war years was what has come to be known as the "Massacre of the Ham brown Barn", on their Hamilton Brown farm on the Audrain-Callaway county line southwest of Mexico. In the fall of 1864, several hundred Callaway and Audrain county youths--virtually all the older men had already gone to war--were enlisted for service with General Price, then south of the Missouri River, after years of campaigning in the deep south. The recruiting was done by the late Judge W. R. Terry, and Frank F. Turley, of west Callaway, and the men had assembled in a camp on Four Mile Creek, west of Hatton. A small group of the late 'teen age boys, separated from the larger party of their companions, stopped overnight in the Ham Brown barn. Tracked there, through a November snow, by a party of Federal troops, they were surrounded, and surrendered, to a contingent of the forces of Major James C. Bay, then of the Wellsville district post. Instead of being treated as prisoners of war, the were shot down the next morning. The only survivor of the party of Confederate youths was J. E. Bradley, 16 years old who owed his life to the pleas of Miss Mary A. Brown. Miss Brown pleaded for the lives of all the youths, but only Bradley was spared. The article was in the Columbia Missourian of Tuesday April 20 1926. He was married to Miss Nannie Coons for 45 years she was still alive at that time. On some of my records he is listed as dying in 1924 and no day.
