Lippoldt Research

Questions to Research

The only church records that I am certain are of our immediate family that I copied and placed on the internet site include Heinrich and Elisabeth (nee Schulte) Lippold. I can only guess that the other Lippold families listed in those German records might be related. I put all of them online as they are on the microfilm that I viewed. What I write now may be confusing as I am putting a lot of different records and ideas together to help focus on who to look for.

If we start with the Marianne passenger list, the Lippold couple Joh Henry 55 born ?1788, Anna 50 born ?1793, Johann 16 born ?1827, Frederich 7 born ? 1836 and Mary born ? 1840, then we look at other data.

From the church records I have online, there is a Johann Mathias Lippold b. 21 April 1827 and a Johann Friedrich Lippold b. 26 February 1835 both sons of Heinrich and Elisabeth. We understand from family history that Fred said he came to the US at the age of 8, which would mean he was born in 1835. Also, I remember grandfather saying that his grandfather Fred had two brothers -- we'll look at the church records I have. There is also Ernst Victor Lippold b. 19 December 1824 and Christopher Heinrich Lippold b. 1 April 1829, oh, that makes 3 brothers. I go back to the letter written in 1967 and grandfather says his grandparents came to US with their parents when they were 6 and that Fred had 3 brothers.

I have seen the tombstone for a Victor Lippold born 10 April 1825 who died in Indiana on 7 October 1904 and is buried in the cemetry in Stendal, IN where some other family members are, too. I have wondered who he is and thought he was probably the Johann who was age 16 on the ship, but now I don't know looking at the birth record I copied.

Something else to consider is a page of Abstracts of Wills from Pike County, Indiana as there is one entry 25 March 1889 for a Martin Leppold, who left a widow Johann Leppold. There is notation that Leppold died 29 March 1889. In the abstract they say the widow gets her husband's entire estate and his share of the estate of his deceased brother Ernest Victor Leppold in Pike County, Indiana. Of course this means Ernst Victor Leppold and Victor Lippoldt are not the same people, but could Martin and Ernst Victor be brothers of Fred?

Then where is Christopher?

I have questioned the young girl Mary listed as a 3 year old with Joh Henry and Anna would be their own. I know it is not unusual for a woman of 47 to have a child, but I had wondered if she might actually be a granddaughter? Again looking at the church record I have posted, Anne Marie Sophie Lippold b. 27 December 1822 would mean Elisabeth was 29 when Anne Marie was born and 47 when Mary is born.

Look at the census record for 1850 in Ohio, we see our family recorded with the surname Lipwold. Henry is said to be 66 (which means he was born in 1784), Louisa (is that Anne on the passenger list and Elisabeth on the church records?) age 56, which means she was born 1794, John 25 (b 1825), Martin age 22 or 23 (b 1828 or 1827), Frederick 15 (b 1835) and Jacob 6 (b 1844) -- WHO is JACOB, we ask? If he is a child of Henry and Elisabeth, she was pregnant at age 50 with him on the ship -- the trip was in 1843. Okay, on the census record, all of the other Lipwold's are listed as born in Germany, there is no place indicated as to where Jacob is born. Also, several families were living together at this house. Maybe Jacob was actually a child of the Barrett family of Ohio who had other children ages 15 and 1????

In the online biography of Frederick Lippoldt in the History of Pike and Dubois Counties, Indiana his date of birth is listed as 18 February 1835 and parents Henry and Elizabeth born 1786 and 1796. Then the St. James Lutheran Church records in Holland, Indiana record his name as Johann Friedrich Lippoldt and birth as 2 February 1835 in Melle, Gesmold, Hannover; confirmation date of 1848 in Cincinnati, Ohio. The death certificate says he was born 5 March 1835 and name of Frederick John Lippoldt.
