The Campbell Genealogy




Alexander Campbell,
a Presbyterian Ulster Scot,  was born about 1770.  He married Margaret Johnson and emigrated to the United States along with their children:  James (1794-1858), Samuel C. ((1794-1872), William (1797 -), Alexander ((1806-),, and Andrew (1810-).  They settled in Armstrong Township, Indiana County, Pennsylvania.

The Next Generation

James Campbell, son of Alexander, was born in 1794 in, and died 28 March 1858 in Armstrong Township, Indiana County, Penn.  He married Margaret Craig 15 March 1826, the daughter of William Craig and Mary Gamble.  James fought in the War of 1812 in the Army Infantry, 2nd Brigade, 2nd Division, in the Bucks County Militia as a Private from 1812 to 1814. It is still under research consideration whether or not the Campbell family first settled in Bucks County.   Both Margaret and James were members of the West Union United Presbyterian Church located near Parkwood, PA;  they are both buried in the West Union Cemetery.  James and Margaret had seven children:  Ann Jane, Margaret, William, Mary, Alexander Samuel, James Jr., and John Otis.

Samuel C Campbell, son of Alexander, was born in 1794 and died 24 October 1872 in Shelocta, Indiana County, Pennsylvania.  He married Margaret Johnston.  Both Samuel and Margaret were members of the United Presbyterian Church and they are buried in the church cemetery there.  Samuel and Margaret had four known children:  William, Samuel Jr., Mary, and James.

Alexander Campbell, son of Alexander Sr., was born 1 June 1806.  He married twice, the first time to Elizabeth Henderson, the daughter of John Henderson and Letitia Fullerton;  the second time to Sarah Ramsey (1855).  Alexander is shown to have been christened at the UP Church in Shelocta.  Alexander and Elizabeth had one known child, Elizabeth, born 1 December 1842.

The Next Generation

Margaret Campbell, daughter of James, was born 11 September 1829 and died 27 October 1885.  She married William A Cochran in Pennsylvania.  Margaret and William Cochran had two known children:  James and Margaret.

William Campbell, son of James, was born 25 May 1831, in Armstrong Twp, Indiana County, PA and he died in 1907 in Armstrong Township, PA.  He married Margaret Patterson, the daughter of Joseph Patterson and Margaret McCollum.  William and Margaret were members of the West Union Church and they are both buried in the cemetery there.  William and Margaret had five known children:  James Alexander, Agnes S., Loucretia, Joseph Lincoln, and Margaret Mae.

Alexander Samuel
, son of James, was born 19 June 1835 in Armstrong Twp, Indiana County, PA and he died 29 January 1902 in Armstrong Twp., PA.  He married Elizabeth Harbison on 28 March 1878, the daughter of William Harbison and Margaret McNutt.  Alexander was a leading citizen in his hometown and served as a member of the school board and ruling elder of the West Union Presbyterian Church.  Both Alexander and Elizabeth are buried in the West Union UP Cemetery.  Alexander and Elizabeth had four children:  William Harbison, Margaret, Tillie Craig, and Mary.

James Campbell Jr., son of James, was born 26 April 1837 in Armstrong Township, Indiana County, PA and he died February 1914 in Armstrong Twp, PA.  He married Martha Robinson.  James was a veteran of the Civil War, serving in Company H, 206th Regiment of the PA Volunteers Infantry.    James and Martha had two known children, Margaret, who married Frank Kring and Callie, the latter whom never married.

John Otis Campbell, son of James, was born 3 August 1840 in Armstrong Township, Indiana County, PA and died 16 November 1929 in Shelocta, Indiana County, PA.  He married Nancy Jane Armstrong, the daughter of John Armstrong.  John served three years in the Civil War as a member of Company A, 78th Regiment of the PA Volunteer Infantry.  He was the last surviving veteran of the conflict in Shelocta and Armstrong Township.  Both John and Nancy were lifelong members of the Shelocta United Presbyterian Church and both are buried in the cemetery there.  John and Nancy had six children::  Ella, John, Mary E., Anna B., James Ross, and Hugh A.

Samuel Campbell, Jr., son of Samuel C. Sr., was born in 1835 and he died 28 August 1875 in Armstrong Township, Indiana County, Pennsylvania.  He married Jane Craig, the daughter of Hugh Craig and Barbara Ramsey.  Samuel served in the Civil War with the 54th Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteer with the rank of Private.  He and his wife Jane were lifelong members of the Shelocta UP Church and both are buried in the cemetery there.   Samuel and Jane had eight children, all born in Armstrong Township.  They were:  Melvin Herbert, Louella Jane, Clarissa Francis, Hugh Oliver, Jane Elizabeth, Hugh Franklin, Samuel Everett, and Emma Florence.


Elizabeth Campbell,
daughter of Alexander Campbell, was born 1 December 1842 and she died 14 January 1924.  She married Archibald Campbell, the son of William Campbell and Rebecca St Clair.  Elizabeth and Archibald had twelve children:  Alda May, Margaret Merilla, William Alexander, Rebecca Amelda, Harry Graham, Mary Jane, Letitia Cordelia, Archibald Franklin, Catherine Jeorgetta, Mabel Elizabeth, John Roy, and Lois Melinda.

The Next Generation

James Alexander Campbell, son of William, grandson of James, was born apt 1859 in Parkwood, Indiana County, Penn and died 26 Sept 1920 in Parkwood, PA.  He married Margaret Elizabeth Anthony 9 October 1884, the daughter of David Anthony and Margaret Miller.  James and Margaret were lifelong members of the West Union UP Church and both are buried in the Oakland Cemetery.  James and Margaret had six children:  Agnes, Elsie, Lula, James Walter, Bertha Agnes, and Olive.

Joseph Lincoln Campbell
, son of William, grandson of James, was born 12 February 1865 in Armstrong Township, Indiana County, PA and died 20 Sept 1939 in Indiana, Indiana County, PA.  He married Bessie Blanche Craig, daughter of George Craig and Mary Anderson.  Joseph was a farmer and a member of the First United Presbyterian Church and both he and
Bessie are buried in the Oakland Cemetery.  Joseph and Bessie had one known child,
Margaret Winona who was born in 1915.

Margaret Mae Campbell, daughter of William, granddaughter of James, was born 1 may 1871 and died 6 August 1968 in Indiana County, Penn..  She married James Albert Fleming 31 March 1909, the son of John Fleming and Eveline Thomas.  Margaret and James had three children:  A Merle, Olen Shaulis, and J Wendall.

Margaret Elizabeth Campbell
, daughter of Alexander Samuel, granddaughter of James, was born 6 August 1881 and died 19 June 1960 in

Ralph Ardel Fouts 15 June 1905.  Ralph and Margaret had two known children:  William Charles and Sara Martha.

Tillie Craig Campbell, daughter of Alexander Samuel, granddaughter of James, was born 22 January 1885 and died 1 March 1939.  She married Wilford Blaine Miller 30 April 1913, the son of Robert Miller and Ann Craig.  Tillie and Wilford had two known children:  William and Dorothea.

Ella Campbell, daughter of John Otis and granddaughter of James, was born circa 1860.  She married George H Warner and they had children:  Mabel, Lena, John, Ruth, Robert, Frank, Louise, Clair, Vernie, and Gratta.

John Campbell, son of John Otis, grandson of James, married Minnie Wood 13 July 1899, the daughter of George Wood and Jane Sharp.  They spent most of their lives in Shelocta, active with the Shelocta UP Church.  John and Minnie had four known children:  Bernice, Ellinore, Delone and Robert.

Mary E Campbell,
daughter of John Otis, granddaughter of James, married Harry A Calhoun;  both were from Indiana County, Pennsylvania.  Mary and Harry had two known children:  Elsie and Alta.

Anna B Campbell, daughter of John Otis, granddaughter of James, was born 19 January 1871 and died 22 March 1962.  She married Victor Florence Smith and they had four known children:  L Owen, Quade, Helen, and W Ralph

James Ross Campbell,
son of John Otis, grandson of James, was born 11 October 1873 in Armstrong Township, Indiana County, PA and died 14 November 1951 in Indiana County, PA.  He married first Anne Ellison and second Sarah Pearl Reed.  James Ross was a charter member of the Armstrong Grange and an elder with the West Union UP Church.  He and his wife are buried in the Oakland Cemetery in Indiana.  James and Sarah Reed had nine children:  Hilda Pimella, Nellie Edith, Sara Erma, Martha Janet, Paul Alexander, Dean Armstrong, Thomas Meade, John Oliver, and Vincent.

Hugh A Campbell
, son of John Otis and grandson of James, was born 28 September 1875 in Parkwood, PA and died 21 July 1944 in Saltsburg, PA.  He married Charlotte McCreight.  Hugh was a trustee and elder of the Saltsburg UP Church;  burial in the Shelocta UP Church Cemetery.  Hugh and Charlotte had six known children:  Arthur L., J Harry, Donald W., Clair A., Clarence M., and Ralph.

Clarissa Francis Campbell,
daughter of Samuel, granddaughter of Samuel C, was born 25 March 1864 in Armstrong Township, Indiana County, PA and died 25 March 1957 in Lorton, Virginia.  She married John R. Lytle.  Clara was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church of Indiana and is buried in the Oakland Cemetery.  Clara and John had three children:  Paul C., Samuel Eugene, and Parker.

Emma Florence Campbell, daughter of Samuel, granddaughter of Samuel C., was born 12 February 1875 in Shelocta, Indiana County, PA and she died 23 June 1932 in Warren, Trumbull County, Ohio.  Emma married Charles Frederick Smith, the son of Frederick Smith and Lucy Ann Roof.  Emma and Charles moved from Indiana County to Warren in 1921 along with their seven children:  Arthur Dale, Janet Lucille, Lawrence Campbell, Velma Florence, Everett Hale, Lee Roy, and Eva Fae

Alda May Campbell, daughter of Elizabeth, granddaughter of Alexander, was born 2 May 1862 and died 7 may 1939 in Indiana County, PA.  Alda married Robert I Boyle in 1889 and they had seven children:  Elise, Sarah, Bertha, Vina, Cora, Robert, and Josephine.

Margaret Merilla Campbell, daughter of Elizabeth, granddaughter of Alexander, was born 21 August and died 1 October 1937.  She married first Norman Fulcomer, and second Samuel Fulcomer.  Margaret and Samuel had seven children:  Robert, Ester, Migga, Paul, Ruth, Archibald, and Harry.

William Alexander Campbell, son of Elizabeth, grandson of Alexander, was born 10 march 1866 and he died 10 October 1898.  He married Nora W Campbell, daughter of James Campbell and Martha Mack.  William and Nora had two known children:  Dora and Hulda.

Rebecca Amelda Campbell, daughter of Elizabeth, granddaughter of Alexander, was born 11 February 1868 and died 13 January 1955.  She
married
David W Mack in 1892, the son of Jacob Mack and Mary Wakefield.  Rebecca and David had six children:  Buell, M Stella, Floyd, David Jessie, and Frank

Harry Graham Campbell, son of Elizabeth, grandson of Alexander, was born 28 February 1870 and died 11 January.  He married first, Matilda Mack, and second, Emma Elizabeth Mack, the daughter of William Mack and Sara Mars.  Harry and Matilda had one child, Harry Jr.;  Harry and Emma had two children:  Olga and William

Mary Jane Campbell,
daughter of Elizabeth, granddaughter of Alexander, was born 21 April 1872 and died 13 August 1943.  She married George Washington Wakefield, son of Jeremiah Wakefield and Lucinda Palmer and they had four children:  Doyle, Melvin, and Jeremiah..

Letitia Cordelia Campbell, daughter of Elizabeth, granddaughter of Alexander, was born 9 June 1874 and died 4 December 1963.  She married Gidden N Hildebrand in 1895 and they had four children:  Mabel, Jennie, and Margaret are known.

Archibald Franklin Campbell, son of Elizabeth, grandson of Alexander, was born 5 September 1876 in West Wheatfield Twp, Indiana County, PA and died 6 March 1933.  He married Ida L Mack in 1900, the daughter of Jacob Mack and Mary Wakefield and they had two known children:  J Paul and Ralph.

Catherine Jeorgetta Campbell, daughter of Elizabeth, granddaughter of Alexander, was born 11 April 1879 and died 5 April 1937.  She married August A Kuchenbrod in 1891 and they had four children:  Lois, Gladys, Wilbur, and Edna.

Mabel Elizabeth Campbell was born 31 March 181 in West Wheatfield Township, Indiana County, PA and died 19 September 1944.  She married William C Lichtenfels April 1900 and they had eleven children:  Russell, Ernest, Grace, Forest, Boyd, Frank, Glenn, Elsie, Margie, Dorothy, and Dean. 

John Roy Campbell, son of Elizabeth, grandson of Alexander, was born 1 July 1883 and died 25 December 1956.  He married first, Margaret Lavinia Lichtenfels, and second Della Palmer.   John and Margaret had three
children: 
Merle, Roy, and Irene;  John and Della had one child, Irene.
