The Smith Genealogy
Our Smith Family is of German descent, and one I've found to be the most difficult line to work on. SMITH? Talk about running into dead ends! As it is understood thus far, there were six boys in the Smith family who were sent to the United States by their German parents in the early 1840's who remained behind. This is still under research consideration. What is known is that there were indeed six boys, Frederick, Christ, Louis, Charles, and John. Frederick Smith was my Great Great Grandfather, and the only one I have been able to prove.
Frederick Smith was born in 1847 in Indiana County, PA. He joined the Army when he was sixteen years old, serving as a drummer boy. Frederick's first enlistment came in August of 1864 as part of Company F, the 206th Regiment of the Pennsylvania Infantry. He is listed on the Muster Roll's for Captain Kinter's Company out of Pittsburgh, PA on September 12, 1864. On November 1, 1864, Frederick was transferred to Company A under Captain Rankin, again detailed as a musician, where he remained through June 26, 1865 when he was mustered out.
Sometime after the end of the War Between the States and 1868, Frederick made his way to Austintown,Mahoning County, Ohio; it was here that he met his future bride. On September 3, 1868, Frederick Smith married Lucy Ann Roof, the daughter of John Roof and Catherine Lodwick. On the 1870 federal census for Austintown, Mahoning County, Ohio, Frederick and his wife Lucy are shown occupying the lot next to her parents. By 1880, the Smith family had returned to Indiana County, where they raised their family.
Frederick Smith died in 1905 in Shelocta, Indiana County, PA and his wife, Lucy died during the flu epidemic of 1918 in Shelocta. Both Frederick and Lucy are buried in the Stitt's Burial Grounds (photo), next to their grandson Lawrence.
The children of Frederick and Lucy Roof Smith are:
Frank Smith, who was born after 1870 and who died during the flu epidemic of 1918 in Shelocta, within hours of his mother. Frank was married to Stella Pendleberry, and they are both buried in the Apollo Cemetery. Frank and Stella had two children, Frederick and Irwin.
Mary Kathryn Smith was born after 1872 and died 27 March 1973. She married Robert Adams, son of Robert and Jennie Adams. Kate and Bob Adams had four boys, namely Robert F, Charles Irwin, Leland, and Clair. Both Robert and Kate are buried in Prospect Cemetery. Robert F, their son, married the former Sally Saunders, and they had two sons. Robert Leland, their youngest, was heroically lost during the Viet Nam War.
Nettie Smith was born 25 July 1869 in Austintown, Ohio and she died 11 March 1952 in Cleveland, Ohio. She married Harry Cox, son of John Cox and Sarah Beatty. Nettie was baptized at the Shelocta United Presbyterian Church on July 21, 1878. Nettie and Harry Cox had two known children, Evelyn and Fred. Fred served in WW1 as a Private and was wounded five times.
Charles Frederick Smith was born 28 October 1877 in Shelocta, Indiana County, PA and he died 11 December 1943 in Warren, Trumbull County, Ohio. He married Emma Florence Campbell in 1899, the daughter of Samuel Campbell and Jane Craig. Charles was a steelworker, and brought his family from Indiana to Warren in 1920, in search of a better job opportunity. The Smith family took up housekeeping on South Street in Warren, Ohio and enjoyed many years of close camaraderie. Upon their deaths, both Charles and Emma were buried in the family plot in Oakwood Cemetery.
Charles and Emma had seven children, all born in the family home...
Arthur Dale Smith was born 2 May 1900 in Apollo, PA and he died 24 October, 1980 in Warren, Trumbull County, Ohio. Arthur married Alma Virginia King in 1940, and they were together for forty years when they both died in 1980. Arthur and Virginia had no children.
