| Notes for George AIRHART | ||||||||||||||||||
| George served as a Private in Company K, 3rd LA Infantry. He is thought by some descendants to be the M. G Airhart listed on the Rolls of Prisoners of War paroled at Natchitoches, LA, June 8, 1865. However, there is a note attached to the original record that the writing was illegible and the initials may be wrong. Another descendant relates the family story that George was captured at Vicksburg, but escaped soon after, "borrowed" a boat, crossed the Mississippi River into Louisiana and returned home. Listed in 1850 census with Nicholas and Sarah Airhart, who are his grandparents. According to information passed down in this family, his mother was an Airhart and he, his brother, William G. Airhart, and half-sister Eliza took the Airhart name. Their mother was possibly Elizabeth Airhart as George's oldest daughter was named Elizabeth and Nicholas and Sara had a daughter named Elizabeth of whom nothing is know beyond her birthdate. However, Creel Cemetery records indicate that George's parents were William and Mary A. If correct this would mean that Nicholas had a daughter named Mary and also one named Polly. 1850 LA census-Natchitoches #75 George Airhart, 19, TN; Elisa, 13, TN; Alex, 27, TN; Nicholas, 67, PA, and Sara, 70, S.C. 1860 LA census--Natchitoches #854 George Airhart, 30, TN; Georgiann, 22, GA; Elizabeth J. 8/12, LA. 1880 LA census--Calcasieu #33 George Airhart, 50, TN; Georgiann, 42, GA; Mary R., 16, LA; Eliza V., 15, LA; George W., 14, LA; Julia, 10, LA; Narcisia A. 8, LA; Nancy I., 6, LA; Edmond, N. 4, LA; Eliza A., 42, TN, (half-sister). | ||||||||||||||||||
