Dr. Thomas J. Mabry was born near Liberty Hill, in what is now Edgefield County, November 16, 1815. He received his early education in the schools of Edgefield and Cokesbury Academy and his medical education at the Medical College in Lexington, Ky. and the Medical College of Charleston, from which institution he graduated in medicine and surgery in 1844. In the same year he began practice of his profession in the City and County of Abbeville, here he practiced for fifty years.
The following is a tribute to Dr. Mabry from the Abbeville Press and Banner of November 4, 1896: "For fifty years he was a notable figure in Abbeville County, and during that time he was an honored member of the profession which he adorned. He was a man of fine mind and natural ability, equable temper and lovable in his conduct and character. Honest and kindly of heart, generous and lived at in his dealings, he had many friends. He rose to great eminence in his chosen profession, being held in the highest esteem by the physicians of this County and State and by thousands outside of his profession to whom he brought relief. His pride in his profession was unbounded. [From THE ABBEVILLE COUNTY FAMILY HISTORY, J. Greg Carroll, Editor, Oct.,1979]
