Transported to Australia in 1827

Note: The information below has come from several descendants of William Valentine Maybury who are drawing on various sources which seem to provide contradictory information. This page will be updated as these conflicts are resolved.

William Valentine Maybury was born on Valentine's day 1799 at Shifnal in Shropshire. He was the sixth of ten children of William and Jane Maybury:

  1. Martha Maybury, bapt. 2 May 1793 at Upton Magna, Shropshire
  2. Mary Maybury, bapt. 2 May 1793 at Upton Magna, Shropshire
  3. Charles William Rogers Maybury, bapt. 26 Sep 1795 at Upton Magna, Shropshire
  4. Sabrina Maybury, bapt. 23 Nov 1795 at Upton Magna, Shropshire
  5. Sabarina Maybury, bapt. 23 Oct 1797 at Shifnal, Shropshire
  6. William Valentine Maybury, born 14 Feb 1799; bapt. 17 Feb 1799 at Shifnal, Shropshire; his baptism was also recorded in the parish register at St. Mary's, Shrewsbury, Shropshire on 9 Aug 1801

  10. Robert Acton Maybury, born 30 Jun 1804; bapt. 15 Jun 1806 at St. Mary's, Shrewsbury, Shropshire

William was first married to Mary Hilll in 1820. They had a daughter, Margaret Maybury, born in London, England in 1821.

On 30 October 1827 at Old Bailey in London, William Valentine Maybury pleaded guilty of embezzlement and was sentenced to be transported to Australia for fourteen years. He was transported in 1828.

There is much confusion about the marriages of William Valentine Maybury. Some say that his second wife was Sarah Gillespie. If that is the case, then Sarah Mernagh (aka Sarah Mariner) would have been his third wife. Adding to the confusion is the suggestion by at least one descendant that these three women named Sarah were one and the same. If this is the case, then the 1855 marriage date (below) cannot be correct.

In 1855 at Rylestone in NSW, William married his second (or third) wife, Sarah Mernagh, daughter of John Mernagh and Mary Johnson. William Valentine Maybury died 1 Nov 1880 at Gulgong, NSW.
