In 1907, Miss Anna Jarvis arranged for a church service to honor all mothers, to
be held on the anniversary of her own mother's death. The idea caught on, first
in Philadelphia, then in other cities. "Mother's Day" became so popular that on
May 8, 1914, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation making the
second Sunday in May a day for "public expression of our love and reverence
for the mothers of our country."
