OTHER INFORMATION

History of Ashtabula County by the Ashtabula Chamber of Commerce.

Ashtabula County is the largest of Ohio's counties, containing 720 square miles. The name comes from an Indian word meaning "fish".

The city of Ashtabula is the largest municipality in the county, an important Lake Erie port. Conneaut and Ashtabula city harbors are important iron ore and coal shipping ports. Route 45, which connects Ashtabula with Warren, Salem and the Ohio River has carried homesteaders in covered wagons inland from the lake and was later the trade route between eastern cities and the frontier.

The main industries in Ashtabula County include; metals, machinery, transportation equipment, fabricated metals, rubber, stone-clay-glass, chemicals, automotive equipment, fiberglass boats, home appliances, microphones and tin cans. Dairy products are the chief agricultural industry.

Probate Court has birth and death records 1867 to 1908, marriage records from 1811, probate records from 1800's, Health Department has birth and death records from 1909; Clerk of Courts has divorce records from 1811 and civil court records from 1800's; County Recorder has land records from 1800.

The county newspaper in Ashtabula County is The Star Beacon. The URL for The Star Beacon is, http://www.starbeacon.com.
