OTHER INFORMATION

Fairfield County's productive soil and "fair fields" gave the county its name.

Lancaster, the county seat, was one of early Ohio's most prominent towns and a center of politics and law. Among Lancaster's famous citizens were Senator Thomas Ewing, John Sherman and his brother Civil War General William Sherman.

A natural attraction of the county is the Mount Pleasant sandstone outcrop called Standing Stone. At one time an Indian village, Tarhe Town, was situated around the rock.
