Holmes County, located about 60 miles south of Cleveland, has numerous springs. There are limestone and coal deposits in the southwest section.
The area was settled by Amish immigrants from Germany and Switzerland. Today Ohio contains one of the largest concentrations of Amish people in the nation. Millersburg, the county seat of Holmes County, is considered the center of Amishland.
