Brooks, 86, of St. Charles, formerly of Qulin, died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, at her residence. Mrs. Brooks was a housewife and a member of the Oglesville General Baptist Church. On Sept. 22, 1936, she married Samuel Brooks in New Madrid. He preceded her in death on Aug. 20, 1983. Also preceding her in death are parents, Armpstead Patrick Lawrence and Reathie McWaters Lawrence; one daughter, Carol Brooks Brown; one grandson, Timothy Brown; one great-great-grandson, Cole M. Ferrell; three sisters, Christine Little, Alfreda Gipson and Juanita Swinger; and one brother, Delbert Lawrence. Survivors include one daughter, Betty Ferrell and husband, Jimmy, of St. Charles; one son, Robert Brooks and wife, Leda, of Ellsinore; one son-in-law, Charles Brown of St. Peters; one sister, Imogene Smith of St. Louis; three brothers, J.W. Lawrence of Windyville, Mike Lawrence of Fort Mohave, Ariz. and Mack Lawrence of Greenville; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Burial will be at Qulin Cemetery in Qulin next to her husband. ------------------------------------------------------------- James Bruce MALDEN--James Wilson Bruce, 72, of Farmington died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2005, in Parkland Health Center at Farmington. Mr. Bruce was born June 15, 1932, in Poplar Bluff. He married Melvina Williamson on April 8, 1993, in St. Louis. She survives. He served in the U.S. Army and was retired from McDonnell-Douglas in St. Louis. Other survivors include: one daughter, Nelda Louise Bruce of DeSoto; one stepdaughter, Faye Bruce of Qulin; four stepsons, Danny Jackson of Gideon, Dennis Jackson of Bernie, Mike Jackson of Clarkton and Dave Jackson of Qulin; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three brothers, Vernon Bruce of Poplar Bluff, Lloyd Wilson Bruce of Texas and Lee Bruce of Wisconsin; and five sisters, Margie Timmons of Poplar Bluff, Gladys Hyde of Arnold, Mary Parker of Mehlville, Maggie Ramos of Florissant and Frances Bruce of Texas. Pershing VA Medical Center. Mr. Stratton was born Jan. 1, 1941, in Qulin. A longtime resident of Poplar Bluff, Mr. Stratton was of the Baptist faith. A veteran of the U.S. Army having served in Vietnam, he was a head sawyer at a saw mill. He enjoyed gardening, working on small engines, fishing, cooking outside and pitching horse shoes. He married Hattie Turner April 7, 1990, in Poplar Bluff. She survives. Also surviving are two sons, Rudy Stratton of West Plains and Jeffrey L. Rightnower of Florida; four daughters, Linda Hoskias of Broseley, Kimberly Mueller of Fisk, Freida Phillips of Wappapello and Eugenia Neel of Poplar Bluff; three brothers, Ray Stratton of Doniphan, Sherman Stratton of Ellington and Gary Stratton of Poplar Bluff; five sisters, Opal Gnocini of Buffalo, N.Y., Elsie Pinky of Illinois, Jeannie Melvin of Arizona, Linda Brittion of Poplar Bluff and Darlene Stratton of Missouri; and 12 grandchildren. Yarbro, 79, of Poplar Bluff died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2005 at his residence. Mr. Yarbro was born June 13, 1925 in Dyer County, Tenn. and moved to Poplar Bluff in 1943. A loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, he was a retired farmer. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, crossword puzzles and any competitive activity. He was a veteran of WWII, having served in the United States Army in the 42nd Rainbow Division in Germany, France and Austria. On Aug. 18, 1944, he married Peggy Brown. She survives. Preceding him in death are one son, Allen Yarbro; parents, Solen and Vera Yarbro; and brother, Arville Yarbro. Other survivors include three children, Genelda Cornelison and husband, Clark, and Kathy Kurka, all of St. Louis and Markel Yarbro and wife, Shirley, of Poplar Bluff, one sister, LaNelle Shelby of Sacramento, Calif.; two brothers, Lawrence Yarbro and Jack Yarbro, both of Poplar Bluff; eight grandchildren, Melissa Brydels, Kari Gutjahr, David Locke, Brian Miller, Courtney Tucker, Mark Yarbro, Kyle Kurka and Whitney Kurka; and six great-grandchildren. Weeks, 38, of Qulin, formerly of Poplar Bluff, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005 at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Weeks was born Nov. 25, 1966, at Poplar Bluff. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist Faith. She enjoyed spending time with her family. On Sept. 16, 1990 she married Bobby Weeks. He survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Katie Lee Jeanie Weeks and Tyarra Sue Ann Weeks, both of the home; and two sisters, Mary Croy of Fairdealing and Sandy Putman of Poplar Bluff. Burial will be at Qulin Cemetery. ------------------------------------------------------------- Georgia Ann Dodson, 63, of Poplar Bluff died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2005 after an extended illness. Mrs. Dodson was born Oct. 6, 1941 in Poplar Bluff. She was a member of the Glory to Glory Ministry, and a retired Lab Technician for Lucy Lee Hospital. She enjoyed oil and watercolor painting and collecting Victorian items. On May 8, 1964, she married Travis J. Dodson in Poplar Bluff. He survives. She was preceded in death by parents, Louis and Thelma Walker Kalkbrenner, and grandson, Michael Derek Austin. Other survivors include two daughters, Tracie Austin and Misty Dodson, both of Qulin; one sister, Beverly Edwards of Louisville, Ky.; one brother, Billy Kalkbrennar and wife, Doris, both of Poplar Bluff; one granddaughter, Meighan Austin of Qulin; and one son-in-law, Shannon Austin of Qulin. Burial will be at Brown Chapel Cemetery in Broseley. ------------------------------------------------------------- Opal Carr QULIN -- Opal Carr, 68, of Grandin, formerly of St. Louis and West Alton, died Monday, Jan. 3, 2005, at the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center of cancer. Mrs. Carr was born March, 6, 1936 in Qulin. She was a retired worker at Bussman Fuse in St. Louis and Olin Corporation in Alton. She enjoyed helping people, growing flowers and hunting. She was a high school graduate from Qulin, Class of 1954 and a member of the First General Baptist Church in Ellsinore. On Sept. 15, 1955, she married Irvin "Super" Carr. He survives. Preceding her in death is one brother, Michael Schrader and one grandson, Jason Carr. Other survivors include one son, Ronald Carr and wife Kim Carr of Jacksonville Fla.; one brother, Jerry Schrader of Lomont; and one granddaughter, Jillian C. Carr of Dayton, Tenn. Burial will be in the Qulin Cemetery. ------------------------------------------------------------- Garver John CAMPBELL--John William (Bill) Garver, 68, of Williamsville, a former Qulin resident, died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2005, in St. Francis Medical Center at Cape Girardeau. Mr. Garver was born March 14, 1936, in Qulin. He married Anna Mae Byrd on Nov. 27, 1954, in Poplar Bluff. He served in the Army National Guard. He was a retired farmer and saw mill owner and operator. He was of the Baptist faith, member of the National Rifle Association and enjoyed hunting and fishing. Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Debbie Holloway and husband, Terry of Puxico, and Jodie Woley of Wappapello; one son, Bill Garver and wife, Linda of Williamsville; seven grandchildren, Johnny Pierce, Jessica Fleeman, Jennifer Holloway, Jamie Holloway, Jonathan Helm, Jordan Holloway and John Bill Garver; two great-grandchildren, Hannah Pierce and Brayton Bridges; and one sister, Betty Vancil of Crystal River, Fla. He was preceded in death by his parents, John William and Vera Clark Garver, one sister, Patsy Garver, and one brother, Richard Clark Garver. Mr. Ferraresi was born May 17, 1927, at Monette, Ark. A veteran of the United States Army, having served in World War II, he retired in 1989 from truck driving and from the Butler County Highway Department. He enjoyed fishing. On April 24, 1955, he married Virginia Baxter. She survives. Other survivors include three daughters, Carla Williams and husband, Richard, of Otisville, Mich., Vicki Ferraresi of Poplar Bluff and Robin Griffin of Flushing, Mich.; two sons, Randall Ferraresi and wife, Jennifer, of Plano, Texas, and Curtis Ferraresi of Broseley; four sisters, Esther Crawfford of Bradenton, Fla., Josephine Corn of Lake Havasu, Ariz., Mary Alexander of Davison, Mich., and Betty Walker of Burton, Mich.; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Mr. Harrison was born March 12, 1957 in Kokomo, Ind. A member of the Oglesville General Baptist Church, he enjoyed rebuilding cars and trucks, carpentry and fishing. On Feb. 14, 1990, he married Michelle Doyel in Centerville, Tenn. She survives. Other survivors include four daughters; Brandy Shipp and husband, William, of Malden, Brandy Eaton of Qulin, Krystal Duncan and husband, Mark, of Rombauer, and Nichole Marie of Arnold; one son, Steven Harrison of Qulin; three sisters, Glenda Faye Riddle of Wappapello, Brenda Kaye Blume of Malden and Francis Marie Huggins of Oglesville; three brothers, Jimmy Dale Harrison of Hendersonville, Tenn., Jerry Wayne Harrison of Smyrna, Tenn., and Roger Dean Harrison of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; one granddaughter, Alison Jolie Michelle Shipp of Malden; and one grandson, Chandler Layton Thomas Shipp of Malden. Mrs. Alford was born Nov. 9, 1927, at Golden, Miss. She was the owner of Alford's Caf/ in Qulin. She married Murel Alford in Piggott, Ark. He preceded her in death on Jan. 19, 1978. Survivors include one daughter, Betty DeFord of St. Louis; two sons, Ray Alford and Douglas Alford, both of Poplar Bluff; two sisters, Helon Myrick of Bell City and Bonnie Vaughn of Poplar Bluff; one brother, Bill Stockton of Qulin; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Burial will be in the Qulin Cemetery. ------------------------------------------------------------- Mildred Whitlow Mildred Thomas Whitlow, 84, of Pearland, Texas, formerly of Qulin, died Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2004, at St. Luke's Hospital in Houston. Mrs. Whitlow was born July 31, 1920, at Henderson, Tenn. A member of the Shadycrest Baptist Church in Pearland, Texas, she was a graduate of Qulin High School and was employed in St. Louis for more than 40 years before retiring and moving to Pearland, Texas. She enjoyed all sports, visiting with her church members, friends and family. On Dec. 18, 1940, she married Louis H. Whitlow at Poplar Bluff. He preceded her in death on Jan. 20, 2002. Survivors include one daughter, Linda Sanderlin and husband, Jerry, of Houston; one sister, Louise Shull Medler and husband, Glen, of Poplar Bluff; two grandsons, Kent Eaton and wife, Charmaigne, of Shawnee, Kan., and Evan Eaton of Pearland, Texas; two great-grandchildren, Julia Eaton of Shawnee, Kan., and Anthony Eaton of Pearland, Texas; one niece, Deborah Barker of Poplar Bluff; one nephew, James A. Mrs. Pierce has lived all of her life around Qulin. She was a member of the Qulin Church of Christ. She was a homemaker who loved flowers and gardening. She married Carl Pierce Dec. 24, 1934 in Poplar Bluff. He died April 13, 1989. Survivors are one daughter, Politea Stockton of Qulin; one son, Breck Pierce of Qulin; five brothers, Ray Tompkins of Pollard, Ark., Bill Tompkins of Patterson, Glen Tompkins of Qulin, Jerry Tompkins of Bellville, Ill. and Theron Tompkins of Patterson; three sisters, Dorothy Martin of O'Fallon, Betty Davis of Patterson and Margie O'Donnell of St. Louis; three grandchildren, James Keith Stockton and Scott Stockton, both of Qulin, and Johnny Pierce of Wappapello, and five great-grandchildren. Mr. Suiter was born Jan. 1, 1947, at St. Louis. He lived most of his life in Qulin. A United States Army veteran, having served in Germany during the Vietnam War, he was a former employee of Hopkins Seed Company in Qulin. He was married to Goldie Arnold. She preceded him in death on Nov. 6, 1999. Survivors include one daughter, Melissa; two sisters, Pat Drew of Qulin and Brenda Hosea of St. Francis, Ark.; two brothers, Fred Suiter and Jerry Suiter, both of Qulin; and several stepchildren, stepgrandchildren and great-stepgrandchildren. Mr. Fondren was born Feb. 17, 1920, at Berry, Ala. He was retired from the G.A.F. Corp. in St. Louis. He was a member of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, and was a veteran of the United States Army, having served in WWII. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, yard work and repairing televisions. On Aug. 20, 1940, he married Grace Wells in Poplar Bluff. She survives. Other survivors include one sister, Patricia Smith of Reyno, Ark.; one brother, Robert Ford of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and many nieces and nephews. Eastwood, 84, of Qulin died Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2004, at the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center in Poplar Bluff. She had been a resident of Qulin most of her life. Mrs. Eastwood was born June 12, 1920, at Portageville. A homemaker, she was of the Pentecostal faith. On June 21, 1962, she married Melvin Eugene Eastwood. He preceded her in death on March 17, 1995. Survivors include one daughter, Doris Jean Melton of Broseley; one brother, Jasper Ramsey of Portageville; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Boswell, 86 of Poplar Bluff died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004, at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Boswell was born April 6, 1918, at Malden. She had lived in Qulin most of her life and had lived in Poplar Bluff for 20 years. she had been a member of the Lone Prairie Missionary Baptist Church for most of her life. After moving to Poplar Bluff she became a member of the First Baptist Church. She had worked as a CNA at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center until retirement. On Jan 5, 1938, she married WM. Garland Boswell at Piggott, Ark. He preceded her in death Jan 5, 1965. Survivors include one son, Curt Boswell of Doniphan; two sisters, Margie Wright and Betty Hartwell, both of Qulin; one grandson and one great- grandson. She married Carl Clark in Alton. She was a member of Fagus General Baptist Church and was a homemaker. She enjoyed gardening and spending time with her children and grandchildren.
