Vernon was born on April 21, 1934 in Bruceton TN to the late Vernon K and Vivian L. Webb. On April 28, 1952 Vernon married Flora Fay Williams of Qulin MO. to this union was born four children. Donna, sue Collard, Vernon Wesley Scott, Donald Wayne Scott, and Levora Fay Tripp. Vernon leaves 9 grandchildren and 2 great grand children. he is buried in Hollow Rock, TN. ------------------------------------------------------------- Llyod Hefner Campbell - Lloyd Calvin Hefner, 85, of Qulin died Monday. March 14, 2005, at the John J. Pershing VA Medical Center in Poplar Bluff. Mr. Hefner was born Nov, 26, 1919 in Campbell. He was a member and Deacon of the Osborn General Baptist church for many years and in later years was a Honorary Deacon. He was a United States Navy Veteran having served during World War II and was employed as a retired self-employed carpenter. On Dec. 20 1940. he married Wilma Huffman in Poplar bluff. She survives. Survivors include two sons, Delane Hefner and wife, Ersa, of Qulin and Allan Hefner and wife, Lisa, of Milledgeville, Tenn.: two daughters, Reva Jean Barr and husband, Richard, of Greenville and Rhonda Howe and husband, Johnny, of Mullberry, Fla,; two brothers, Dallas Hefner of Qulin and Cleattus Hefner of Poplar Bluff; one sister, Lola Benton of Poplar bluff; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Hefner, 75, of Harviell, died Wednesday March 2, 2005, at the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center. She had been in declining health for the past six months. Mrs. Hefner was born Jan. 10, 1930 in Campbell. A member of Fellowship Southern Baptist Church, she was a former Bible Study teacher, as Sunday School teacher, and a Bible School teacher. She was previously very active in missions programs, as well as the Baptist church Camp in Van Buren. A homemaker, she was a member of the Sho-Me-Senior quilting Ladies Group at Harviell. On April, 3, 1946, she married Z.J.Hefner at Pollard. AR. He preceded her in death on Feb. 12, 1997 Survivors include two daughters, Brenda Menley of Poplar Bluff and Debby Chilton of Van Buren; two sons Charles Hefner and Roger Hefner, both of Poplar bluff; four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; six step- grandchildren; and 17 step-great grandchildren. Mr. Bridgeman was born Dec. 28, 1950, in Cape Girardeau. He was a retired carpenter and a U.S. Army veteran. On July 28, 1975, he married Emma "Sue" Baucom. She survives. Other survivors include his parents, Sylvester and Almeda Bridgeman of Advance; one son, Westley Bridgeman of Qulin; one daughter, Rhonda Wisdom of Advance; one sister, Sharon Hart of Advance; and one grandchild. Mr. Guess was born July 12, 1921, in Broseley. He was a former resident of Flint, Mich. He was a member of the American Legion in Qulin and the VFW Post in Poplar Bluff. A U.S. Army veteran, he served in World War II and received two Bronze Stars. Retired from General Motors, he enjoyed gardening, hunting and fishing. Survivors include two sons, Gary Guess and wife, Shelley, of Qulin and D. Kent Guess and wife, Sandy, of Florissant; one daughter, Patricia Guess of St. Charles; three grandsons, Michael Litterst, Ronnie Henerforth and David Stopsky; four granddaughters, Tamara Noack, Amy Dunn, Kathleen Justman and Elizabeth Stopsky; three great-granddaughter, Ashley, Alexis and Lily; three sisters, Debra Swain of Ava, Georgiabelle Schnade and husband, Bach, of Eldon, and Gloria Wheeler and husband, Darell, of Camendton; one sister-in-law, Fran Guess of Cuba; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives. Burial will be in the Brown Chapel Cemetery. ------------------------------------------------------------- DAILY AMERICAN REPUBLIC OCTOBER 7, 1965 Mrs. Lola Guess Victim Of Stroke Dies In Hospital Mrs. Lola Guess, 64-year-old resident of Route 2, Brosley, died at 1:20 p.m yesterday in Alexian Brothers Hospital, St. Louis, after suffering a stroke. She had been hospitalized there for the past 10 days. Born at Mill Spring Sept. 7, 1901, she moved to Butler County at the age of 10 years. On Jan. 11, 1919, she was married to Zelma J. Guess, who survives. Also remaining, are the following children: Mrs. Delma Swain, Route 3, Ava; Delbert L. Guess, Flint, Mich.; Mrs. Aleen Dunn and Mrs. Inez Baker, both of St. Louis; Zelma J. Guess, Jr., Wentzville; Franklin and Leroy F. Guess, both of St. Louis; Wiley A. Guess, Los Angeles, Calif.; Georgie Ray Guess, Little Rock, Ark., and Mrs. Gloria Wheeler, El Centro, Calif. One granddaughter, Shannon Kay Guess, has made her home with Mr. and Mrs. Guess. In ad-dition there are 30 other grandchildren and two great- grandchildren. Miller, 75, of Broseley died Saturday, Aug. 20, 2005, at his residence. Mr. Miller was born June 27, 1930, in Peach Orchard, Ark. He was a member of the Elk General Baptist Church. A U.S. Navy veteran, he worked at the St. Louis Malable for ten years before moving to Broseley in 1960 where he was a farmer. He enjoyed camping and fishing. On June 18, 1950, he married Beverly Kern. She survives. Other survivors include one daughter, Sandra Reed and husband, Terry, of Qulin; six brothers, Johnny Vaughn of Jonesboro, Ark., David Vaughn of Arlington, Tenn., Wesley Metz of Manilla, Ark., Robert Metz, Edgar Metz and Donald Metz, all of Paragould, Ark.; two sisters, Betty Holmes of Jonesboro, Ark. and Ada Owens of Lafe, Ark.; and two grandchildren, Josh Reed and Tiffany Reed. Mr. Dunaway was born July 9, 1961 in Twentynine Palms, Calif. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. A carpenter, he enjoyed woodworking. Survivors include one stepdaughter, Erica; his mother, Mildred Elkins of Broseley; five brothers, George A. Dunaway and Eric Ray Elkins, both of Roseburg, Ore., David Lee Dunaway of Lockhart, Texas, Rodney A. Dunaway of Los Angeles, and Jason Earl Elkins of Dexter; and one sister, Cindy Marie Kingery of Roseburg, Ore. Carter, 51, of Qulin died Thursday, May 26, 2005. Mr. Carter was born Aug. 31, 1953 in Qulin. He was a farm hand, formerly employed by Roy Nail for ten years and Frank Wright for 15 years. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Survivors include four brothers, Jerry Carter, Kent Carter and Greg Carter, all of Qulin, and Leon Carter of Poplar Bluff; two sisters, Linda Sauls of Astoria, Ore. and Joyce Webb of Qulin. Burial will be in the Qulin Cemetery. ------------------------------------------------------------- Opal Conover FISK -- Opal Marie Conover, 83, of Broseley, died Monday, April 25, 2005, at her residence. Mrs. Conover was born Feb. 26, 1922, in Zalma. She was a homemaker and devoted to her family. She loved gardening and flowers. She was a member of the Elk General Baptist Church and had lived in Broseley for about 70 years. On June 21, 1938, she married John E. Conover. He survives. Also surviving are three daughters, Connie Pierce, and husband Glen, of Qulin, Barbara Pritchett, and husband Larry, of Broseley, Lawana Shearrer, of Cedar Hill; one son, John Pete Conover, and wife Debbie, of Broseley; one sister, Bea Christian, of Poplar Bluff; two brothers, Ale Slaughter, of Marshall, and Walter Slaughter, of Poplar Bluff; 11 grandchildren, Donald and Darren Pierce, Donna Morgeson, Glenna Watson, Bryan, David and Darwin Shearrer, Larry Ray Pritchett, Ann Marie McLane, Andrea Conover and Greg Vaughn and 14 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Floyd was born on Oct. 4, 1946 in Flint, Mich. She had been a resident of Malden, Dexter and Fisk for many years. She lived in Fenton for five years before moving to Cape Girardeau a year ago. She was a member of the Calvary General Baptist Church in Dupo, Ill. On Jan. 17, 1998, she was married to Sonny Floyd in Fenton. He survives. Other survivors include one daughter, Sandra Kay McAdams of Fenton; one son, David Elliott of Kansas City; her mother, Ovella Peck of Fisk; one stepdaughter, Pamela Campbell of Chaffee; three stepsons, Danny Floyd of Fenton, Duane Floyd of Jackson and Stephen Floyd of Cape Girardeau; four grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; one great-grandchild; three stepgreat-grandchildren; two brothers, Don Peck of Fisk and Wilson Peck of Qulin; and three sisters, Joyce White of Springfield; Elaine Wilkerson of Benton and Pat Peck of Fisk. Burial will be at the Dexter Cemetery. ------------------------------------------------------------- Sarah Hibbs FISK -- Sarah Elizabeth Clack Hibbs, 84, formerly of Broseley and Poplar Bluff, died Tuesday, May 10, 2005 at Regents Park Nursing Home in Winter Park, Fla. Mrs. Hibbs was born June 6, 1920 in Gideon. On Nov. 30, 1935, she married Cecil Clack. He preceded her in death on March 21, 1944. She later married Bill Hibbs, who also preceded her in death. Mrs. Hibbs retired from Thompson Boarding Home in Qulin. Survivors include two sons, Dale Clack of Broseley and Bob Clack of Yorkville, Ill.; two daughters, Glenavern Monroe of Orlando, Fla., and Dorothy Davis Gomes of Fern Park, Fla.; three brothers, Harold Griffin and Glendal Griffin, both of Poplar Bluff, and David Griffin of Monroe City; one sister, Mildred Skinner of Arnold; 17 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren, and 14 great-great- grandchildren. Mrs. Davis was born on Oct. 2, 1935 in Kennett. She was a former resident of North Dupo, Ill. She graduated from Qulin High School in 1954 and was a member of the Black River General Baptist Church. She was retired from the Parks College in Cahokia, Ill. She enjoyed gardening, reading, cooking and spoiling her grandchildren. On July 2, 1955, she married Ron Davis. He survives. Other survivors include one son, Steve Davis of Bozeman, Mont.; one daughter, Sandy Katsahnias and husband, George, of Apex, N.C.; one daughter-in-law, Patti Martineau of St. Louis; three brothers, Eugene Morries of Homosassa, Fla., Bob Morries of Collinsville, Ill., and Jewel Morries of Douglasville, Ga.; one sister, Glinda Varner of Homosassa, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Bryce and Kate Katsahnias, Timmy and Tyler Davis, Kim Sapp, Rick Meyer, and Robby Martineau; and one great- grandchild, Isabelle Sapp. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Irene Johnson and Juanita McCallister; and one brother, Monroe Morries. Mrs. Hardin was born Nov. 8, 1916 in Piggott, Ark. She was a homemaker and a member of the Qulin Church of Christ. On Dec. 1, 1937, she married Charles J. Hardin at Detroit, Mich. He preceded her in death on April 21, 1968. Surviving are three sons, Charles Darnel Hardin and Daryl Hardin, both of Qulin, and Dwight Hardin of St. Louis; one sister, Ava Wright of Cape Girardeau; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Mrs. Mayo was born Nov. 28, 1913, in Pollard, Ark. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Qulin and a homemaker. She enjoyed gardening, raising house plants, quilting and crocheting. On Jan. 1, 1935, she married Amos Mathew Mayo. He preceded her in death on Sept. 12, 1981. Those preceding her in death is one son, John William Mayo; three brothers, Noah Thomas Davis, Elisha Davis and Amos Davis; one sister, Annie Palmer; and parents, Calvin Davis and Louisa Largent. Survivors include one son, Rev. Mrs. McDaniel was born Nov. 3, 1921 in Butler County. A homemaker, she attended the Gospel Tabernacle Church in Poplar Bluff. Mrs. McDaniel enjoyed quilting, flower gardening, camping and fishing. In 1968, she married Earl McDaniel. He preceded her in death on Oct. 5, 1977. Survivors include two sons, Delbert E. Cornett of Broseley and Jerry J. He was a member of the Osborn General Baptist Church and a retired farmer. On June 24, 1926, he married Ruby Edith Hefner in Piggott, Ark. She preceded him in death. Survivors include one daughter, Doris Marie Ham of Qulin; one son, Vernon Benton Jr. of Poplar Bluff; two sisters, Gladys Powell of Kevil, Ky.; Geneva Garrison of Fagus; one brother, Robert Benton of Kevil, Ky.; two grandchildren; 10 great- grandchildren; 20 great-great-grandchildren. On March 31, 1941, he married Clara Griffin Johnson in Butler County. She preceded him in death on May 4, 1995. He was a member of the Church of Christ in Puxico and enjoyed hunting and fishing. On Dec. 19, 1945, he was married to Mary "Dean" Young in Poplar Bluff. She preceded him in death on Aug. 13, 2003. Also preceding him in death are parents, John Wesley and Agnus Oldham Young. Mrs. Adams was born Dec. 29, 1914, in Peach Orchard, Ark. A homemaker, she was a member of the Peach Orchard Pentecostal Church. In 1949, she married Ralph Adams. He preceded her in death on Jan. 16, 1995. Survivors include one brother, John Moler of Qulin and one sister, Mary Moore of Pocahontas, Ark. A graveside service was to be held at 2 p.m. today at Pirtle Cemetery in Peach Orchard with the Rev. Melvin Shelton officiating. Ermert Funeral Home in Corning, Ark., was in charge of the arrangements. ------------------------------------------------------------- Bud Lampe Aloysius Charles "Bud" Lampe, 78, of Symsonia, Ky., formerly of Qulin, died Saturday, March, 5, 2005, at the Western Baptist Hospital in Paducah, Ky., following an extended illness. Mr. Lampe was born on Aug. 22, 1926, at Glennonville. A retired Farm Bureau insurance agent, he also had worked for Wilcoxon, Woods and Parks Insurance Agency. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Knight's of Columbus in Poplar Bluff and a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Lampe was a known storyteller, and during his younger years coached children's sports. An avid bird hunter, he enjoyed dancing and gardening. Mr. Lampe is survived by five children, Charles M. Lampe and wife, Sherry, Vincent Lampe and wife, Cathy, John G. Lampe and wife, Ava, and Julie Gambill and husband, James, all of Poplar Bluff, and Thomas G. Mrs. Eastwood was born June 12, 1920, at Portageville. A homemaker, she was of the Pentecostal faith. On June 21, 1962, she married Melvin Eugene Eastwood. He preceded her in death on March 17, 1995. Mrs. Burk was born March 30, 1909 in Qulin. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Poplar Bluff. She was a housewife. On Nov. 6, 1926, she married Joe Edward Davis in Piggott, Ark. He preceded her in death on Sept. 26, 1982. She later married Harl Burk on April 19, 1986, in Poplar Bluff. He also preceded her in death. A homemaker, she had lived in Butler County most of her life. She was a member of Clark Street Church of Christ in Granite City, Ill. She enjoyed quilting and embroidering. On Dec. 21, 1946, she married Ralph Johnson. He preceded her in death on May 11, 1997. Mrs. Hermann was born Oct. 9, 1959, in Peoria, Ill. She married Ron Hermann on Dec. 25, 1997, and he survives in Qulin. She lived in Arkansas before moving to Qulin 1 ½ years ago. She was a member of the Qulin Assembly of God Church and was employed by Van Winkles Moving Co. Alberta Watts, 94, of Poplar Bluff, went home to be with the Lord Sunday February 5, 2006. Miss Watts was a retired school teacher from the Qulin and Broseley area. She began her teaching career in 1941 at the Osborn School, a one-room school. She taught for 43 years in Butler County. At the Qulin School, she was a Beta Club sponsor, Senior Class sponsor and was responsible for the Yearbook staff. Miss Watts was a substitute teacher for years after retirement and also baby-sat many young people in her home. She was an avid Cardinals fan. Miss Watts was a member of the First Christian Church and a member of the Missouri State Teachers Association. She was born in 1911 in Poplar Bluff, to the late Thomas B. and Grace (Lillie) Watts. Surviving are two sisters, Lillian Garrett and Louise Meyer of Indiana; nephews, Steve Shanks and Dan Sharp; and niece Pat Shackleford, all of Poplar Bluff. She is also survived by nieces: Mary Ladig, Lucy La Hareau, Brenda Kegg, Faith Cerda, Hope Sharp, and nephews: John Garrett, Leon Garrett, John A. Meyer, Dave Sharp, Ted Sharp, as well as 20 great nieces and nephews and six great-great- nieces and nephews. She is also survived by dear friend and care giver Carla Cross.
