INDEX OF SURNAMES found in TEDROW Genealogy
Descendants of John Tedrow
Generation No. 1
1. JOHN1 TEDROW was born Abt. 1790 in PA/OH??, and died Abt. 1812 in Ft. Sackville, nr Vincennes, IN. He married
MARY MAGDALENA ELY (Source: Parke & Vermillion Co., IN History, Pages 795-797.) 1811, daughter of GEORGE ELY
and EVA STROSNIDER. She was born 11 April 1794 in Berks Co., PA, and died 30 September 1884 in Vermillion Co., IN.
Notes for JOHN TEDROW:
Re Leonard Helt of Clinton, Vermillion Co., IN: "Apparently, when the HELT family had relocated from Ohio and had
stayed the winter at Fort Sackville, Vincennes, IN, they also stayed with the TEDROW family at Fort Sackville.
MARY TEDROW'S husband had been hunting for furs, had become ill and was left at Fort Sackville. When DANIEL HELT
returned to Fort Sackville in the Spring, he discovered that MR. TEDROW had died.
MARY TEDROW supposedly had two children by her first husband before marrying DANIEL HELT.
(m Daniel Helt in 1819)
Per Parke & Vermillion Co., IN History, Daniel Helt m POLLY TEEHOM, but this researcher believes this is the same person
as MARY TEDROW. This history states that she had seven children by first marrigae to ? TEDROW.
Notes for MARY MAGDALENA ELY:
MARY is mentioned in her father's Will in 1830 in Washington Co., PA. Not listed with a married name as her sister's
were??? She would have been married to Daniel HELT at this time??
Parke & Vermillion Cos. IN History refers to her as "POLLY TEEHOM", but this researcher believes this is MARY ELY
who married JOHN TEDROW #1. Marriage record in Vigo Co., IN substantiates this, as her name is listed as DETRO
which is a variant of TEDROW. Polly is frequently used as a nickname for Mary, plus the surname TEDROW has been
misspelled so many ways that I believe TEEHOM Could be misread as TEDROW in earlier writings. What has yet to be
researched is "seven children" before marrying Daniel Helt. I know of only two and she doesn't appear old enough to have
had seven children before she m Daniel Helt, re the Census readings and tombstone inscriptions. She was b 1794 and was
25 in 1819 when she m#2. To have had 7 children she would have been married at age 17 or 18 and had a child each year??
Possible, but seems impractical to think that?? Unless there were mulitply births, such as sets of twins? Her first husband,
JOHN TEDROW became sick after a hunting trip near Vincennes IN and died there. --These thoughts written by researcher
Nov 1997.
Information on Mary Ely Tedrow Helt came from marriage record; A Descendant of HELT's in Vermillion Co IN; Vermilion
Co IN History biography; Marilyn Ellis by e-mail where she searched the Ancestor File at Family History Center and also
has the ELY surname as a Collateral relative. Birth years of children are from this Ancestoral File.
Email from Bill Phillips informing me of info on the Washington Co., PA Web Page on the George
EALY family that listed dau Mary's first husband as JOHN TEDROW with a marriage year of 1811. Raymond Bell, a very
well respected researcher for Washington Co., PA was a researcher of the EALY surname. Bill Phillips ancestor was a
brother to George EALY, Michael ELY?
_______________
Land Patent in Vincennes land office for a JONAS TEDROW who purchased land in 1837 and 1840 in Vermillion Co. IN.
Could this be a son of Mary? Or is it JOHN TEDROW, son of Mary?
Children of JOHN TEDROW and MARY ELY are:
2. i. JOHN ELI2 TEDROW, b. 1811, PA or OH?; d. Aft. 1860.
ii. CHILD TEDROW, b. Abt. 1812.
Generation No. 2
2. JOHN ELI2 TEDROW (JOHN1) was born 1811 in PA or OH?, and died Aft. 1860. He married (1) MARY PATON/ PATTON
22 December 1836 in Vermillion Co., IN. She was born Abt. 1818, and died Abt. 1847 in Vermillion Co., IN?. He married
(2) SARAH "SALLY" CONRAD 01 January 1849 in Edgar Co IL. She was born Abt. 1818 in KY, and died Bef. 1860.
He married (3) MRS. MARY BOWIE 09 August 1860 in Warren Co IL.
Notes for JOHN ELI TEDROW:
John Eli Tedrow is "lost" after the 1860 Warren Co., IL Census. He is not listed in IL Census Index 1870. There is no
Probate/Will or Cemetery records for him in Warren Co., IL. Indiana Census needs to be checked in case he went back to
Vermillion Co., IN to reside near his mother, Mary M. HELT.
Land Patents, Vincennes, IN Federal Land Office:
Certificate #21906, JONAS TEDROW of Vermillion County, Indiana bought land -E1/2SE1/4 of Sec. 30 in Township fifteen
North of Range, nine West , in the District of lands subject to sale at Vincennes, Indiana, Containing eighty acres. - dated

NW1/4SE1/4 of Section 30, in township fifteen north, of range nine west, in the District of Lands subject to sale at
Vincennes, Indiana, Containing forty acres - dated 1 Oct 1840.
It is yet to be determined if this Jonas Tedrow is the same person as John Eli Tedrow. John Eli is listed in the 1840
Vermillion Co. IN Census, but not Jonas. As John Eli had a son named Elijah Jonas, this researcher wonders if John Eli's
name was Jonas Eli, not John?
Children of JOHN TEDROW and MARY PATTON are:
i. SARAH J.3 TEDROW, b. Abt. 1837, (Vermillion Co.?), IN.
ii. LEONADAS TEDROW, b. Abt. 1838, (Vermillion Co.?), IN.
3. iii. ELIJAH JONAS TEDROW, b. 29 March 1841, Vermillion Co., IN; d. 28 January 1871, Vermillion Co., IL.

5. vii. ELI FRANCIS TEDROW, b. 23 October 1847, Edgar Co., IL; d. 30 April 1933, Springfield, Sangamon Co., IL
Child of JOHN TEDROW and SARAH CONRAD is:
viii. JOSEPH H.3 TEDROW, b. Abt. 1849, (Vermillion Co?), IN.
Generation No. 3
3. ELIJAH JONAS3 TEDROW (JOHN ELI2, JOHN1) was born 29 March 1841 in Vermillion Co., IN, and died 28 January 1871
in Vermillion Co., IL. He married (1) CYNTHIA WOODRUFF/WOODRING 06 June 1859 in Warren Co., IL. She was born
22 May 1842 in OH, and died 01 April 1925 in St. Louis, MO. He married (2) MARIAH M. FOSTER 21 April 1868 in Niantic,
Macon Co., IL, daughter of WILLIAM FOSTER, JR. and KAZIA HARDIN. She was born 12 April 1845 in Grant Co., KY,
and died 1894 in Macon Co., IL.
Notes for ELIJAH JONAS TEDROW:
ELIJAH JONAS TEDROW enlisted Civil War when he resided in Camargo, Douglas Co IL in 1861. He was listed as 5'10"
with brown hair, gray eyes and light Complexion. And was listed as married. This was a clue to look for an earlier marriage
which was found in Warren Co IL to Cynthia Woodruff. A descendant and researcher of Cynthia states her surname was
WOODRING, not WOODRUFF, although County records in Warren Co IL has the name as WOODRUFF. Cynthia and
Elijah Jonas Tedrow were divorced in Warren Co. IL.
E. Jonas Tedrow was in Co. D, 21st Regt. Ills. Vols.
Civil Warrecords in possession of Mary Ann Kaylor states Jonas Tedrow died 18th of Jan 1871. Pension application by
MARIAH M. SHRADER dated 1 Sep 1890, states that Mariah M. Foster remarried to HENRY SHRADER, but that before
the soldier's death neither of them had been previously married. Which isn't true. Evidently Mariah wasn't aware of Jonas'
first marriage to Cynthia Woodruff/Woodring.
Doctor Kimbrough's statement in Pension Application, states that Jonas had a stiff knee, the right knee which he said was
the result of an injury received while in the service. Doctor was called to treat Jonas in Jan 1871 stating he had paralisis of
right side Complicated or accompanied by a low _____grade of fever and that the paralisis was the result of the injury
received during the war. Jonas was a man of temperate habits and had the reputation among his Comrades of being a good
soldier. His injury was the result of a mule falling on him, when he was driving a supply wagon.
---------------------------
Christian Churchcrecords of Harristown, Macon County, IL give Elijah Jonas Tedrow's birthdate as 29 Mar 1841 in
Vermillion Co., IN. He was baptized in 1857 by hand, received 26 Sep 1869. Doesn't give the place of baptism. He was
received by Confession and Letters of Commendation granted March 20 A. D. 1870
Notes for CYNTHIA WOODRUFF/WOODRING:
Dot Hogan researcher states that surname is WOODRING. This is her husband's ancestry.
E-mail
Dot states that Cynthia was married three times. 2nd birthday Mar 1840?

Some researchers have Mary's name as SHRADER. This is not Correct per Mary E. Phelan's death certificate which states
TEDROW. Mary E. & John Tedrow's mother Maria was married #1 to Elijah Jonas Tedrow and married #2 to Henry
SHRADER. Hence, this is where the name Shrader fits in.

Church records at Visitation Church in Illiopolis, IL support the fact that Augustus was still in Macon Co., IL. Did he go to
Logan Co. IL 1883? His son Edward was baptized at St. Ann's Church in Niantic in 1893, but Kathleen Loftus Howe
genealogy has a son ARLU PHELAN b 1888, this needs checked for further correctness? Is this Arley b 1904? Twin to
Catherine? Parents married 1893. Also, son Arthur Thomas Phelan b 1887. Was Augustus Phelan married previously?
No record has been found of that.

Sarah (Sadie) Jane Phelan and John Allen Tedrow eloped without her parents permission. They went
to Iowa and the above letter indicates they were married there 6 Apr 1896 in the Priests parlor. They
used an alias, obviously to avoid being found, by using John Allen, Nevenville, IA as their P. O. address.
They were married at Creston, Union Co. IA where the record exists.

Calvary Cemetery Tombstone readings by SCGS; On-site readings by Mary Ann Kaylor with picture.
Tombstone is inscribed as SARAH TEDROH which is in error, should be TEDROW, Death date on stone
is inscribed Sept. 26, 1896, which is the wrong year according to dau Theresa who has birth affidavit filed
in Union Co. IA as 1897. This is a delayed birth record with Aunt Nell swearing to the date.
These dates are questionable by this researcher, but to this date have no way of verifying the exact dates,
but have two records with dates to document the tombstone isn't Correct. Theresa was baptized 25 Oct
1897 in Hiteman/Albia, IA and Sarah was listed as mother per the church records with no indication she
was deceased. However just six days earlier, there is a letter from John Allen Tedrow to Sarah's sister Tresa
Phelan, stating that Sarah was ill and dated 19 Oct 1897.

ILLIOPOLIS WOMAN WINS $10,000 IN CoNTEST (Picture included):
An Illiopolis woman, who decided at the last minute to enter a Contest because she "had nothing to lose",
yesterday was presented with the check for first prize--$10,000. At the sight of the five figures on the check,
MRS. CoYNE KAYLOR nearly fainted.
Mrs. Kaylor, left, and her husband, Coyne, right, are shown in the photo with Paul Myers of the firm's
advertising department in Cincinnati, OH. The picture was snapped just as Mrs. Kaylor noticed the amount
she had won.
The Contest was sponsored by Proctor & Gamble in Connection with its product, Drene shampoo.
Contestants were required to answer in 25 words or less why they liked the product.
Mrs Kaylor answer was chosen as the best from among several hundred thousand entries. She was
Contacted Friday by Mr. Myers and told she was a prize winner. But at that time he did not divulge the
amount of the prize she had won. "She thought she has won a $50. prize", Myers said.
He kept the amount a secret from her while making arrangements for a photographer to acCompany him
for the presentation.
Yesterday he returned to Illiopolis and found Mrs. Kaylor at work in a restaurant operated in Connection
with a filling station. With the amount of check still unknown to Mrs. Kaylor, Myers took it from his pocket
and handed it to her.
When the amazed woman realized that the check was for $10,000 she faltered and stepped back, grasping for
support. Tremblingly she posed for pictures, still unbelieving.
"I wasn't gong to enter the Contest, she said, but when I realized it was the last day to get an entry in the mail,
I decided that I might as well since I had nothing to lose."
Now that she has the check she has begun figuring what Uncle Sam's share will be for inCome tax purposes.
Myers estimated that she will be able to keep about $6,000 of it, the rest going for inCome taxes.

MASS OF RESURRECTION
Theresa M. Kaylor
December 24, 1988
Visitation BVM Church
Illiopolis, Illinois
The past four weeks you saw the Advent Wreath in the sanctuary. This wreath with it's four candles
represented the four Sundays of Advent. These candles were there to remind us of our waiting and our
preparation for the meeting of Jesus Christ at Christmas. For THERESA KAYLOR who has been waiting
and preparing through-out her Life, the wait is over. Her life-long preparation is now Complete. The light of
Christ touches her now and she radiates with the warmth and love of Jesus himself. Those four burning
candles represented the brightness of the glory she now experiences.
Theresa has experienced that fleeting moment of passage that we call death. She has walked through that
door into eternity. None of us shall ever physically see or hear or touch her again in this lifetime. However,
spiritually she will be with us still. She has left us behind, probably with many mixed and Conflicting emotions.
In the Gospel for this Mass of Resurrection Jesus said "I am indeed going to prepare a place for you, and then
I shall Come back and take you with me that where I am you also may be."
.....................(lengthy part skipped over).........
People who study the origins of words are reasonable sure that the word good-bye is a shortening of the
four words, "GOD BE WITH YOU". It probably does not mean that for most of us for it has lost that meaning.
However, if we Could think of it in this way, it would take some of the pain out of parting. We have to say
good-bye..God be with you, to Theresa, as she has said good bye..God be with you, to us. The parting is
from each other, not from God. God is still with us and is with her, for "precious in the eyes of the Lord is the
death of his faithful ones."
With love......Father Bob (Rev. Robert Porter)
