GAR medal Benjamin received.
[Given to all men at some point a year or two after the war who survived
the war. They were then called the Grand Army of the Republic and one of these was
put on their graves at their death. It was something like American Legion Vets of
today.]

William's
letters |
| William was paroled as a prisoner of
war at City Point, VA, on January 9, 1863 and reported to Camp Parole, Maryland. By
the time he was returned to the Union lines, however, his health had completely failed.
Admitted to the military hospital on the steamboat "New York" on January
11, 1863, William Silveus died of the fever the next day. The records say in
brackets [typhoid] fever.

Camp Parole
". . . Camp parole was built outside of
Annapolis. At these facilities, Union prisoners paroled from Confederate prisons
could get a bath, a shave, fresh clothing, and in some cases badly needed medical
attention. The soldiers would then stay at Camp Parole until they could be either sent
home or rejoin their regiments. This is the only known photograph of the Parole barracks
and it includes a portrait of the band in front of the camp headquarters."
