Here's another Varner who fought in WWII but who didn't make it back. Merkel Varner, our cousin descended from William Bitts Varner.  [from Ben Varner]

Varner Merkel 1st Lt RHQ KIA 44-11-27 LEYTE Vic. of LUBI Yearbook (1943)

First Lieutenant Merkel Varner, who was killed at Leyte on November 27th 1944 and received the Silver Star posthumously:
