6 September 1896 Varner Reunion
Lake Pulaski, Wright County, Minnesota

reunion.jpg (660487 bytes)

The location of this reunion is on the west side of Pulaski Lake, at John Varner's homestead.  The house was built by Sherd and his brothers and the fretwork, etc., was also done by Sherd.  The house was later moved a short distance to fit better when the farm was divided into lots.  Each of John Varner's children inherited a lot--some on the lake and some which was farm land.  Aunt Etty, Sherd's wife, had a cabin on the lake where they used to have some of the Varner reunions and showers.  Grace (Varner) Kopff (John Varner's daughter) sold her lot to pay burial expenses for her husband, Harry, in the winter of 1932 after he drowned in Pulaski Lake while fishing.  Another lake lot was owned by Frances (Varner) Stevens.  Her son, Jack Stevens, owned his mother's lot as late as 1998.  The house in the reunion picture was finally torn down early spring 1998--the lady who lived there, Mrs. Kiphuth, who did sewing for a living, went to a nursing home.  She had the rooms full of fabric and sewing materials, but you could see that it could have been a nice old house.  Mabel Wirsing and Claudia's dad and his sister are believed to be the only three living grandchildren of those six original Varners brothers.
