Small, horizontal, white marker
next to the parents' stone (William and Anna Catherine
(Bitts) Golden)
This
stone could have been transferred from the old cemetery and because of its
proximity to the Golden tombstones (left of William Golden), could have
belonged to John and Mary or Levi Varner or William and Anna Maria (Silvius)
Bitts.
A
gravestone rubbing project for the next Varner traveler to Freeport!
Also buried in Freeport Cemetery, Infant Varner, born premature, died September 21, 1882, born in Freeport Picture thanks to

Per the Freeport Cemetery Sexton book,
"the upper half of Lot 74, Section E" in the Freeport Cemetery was sold to Kate
Golden, the lower half to a Ralph Nolf (unrelated). In November 1917, there were 21
bodies moved from the old Freeport cemetery on 4th Street, Freeport, to the present-day
cemetery. When these bodies were moved by the Freeport Cemetery, the names were to
be put in the Interment Book. Per Mabel, the Sexton [in 1917] must have been moonlighting.
The names were only in the Sexton's Book but not in the Interment Book. On November
16, 1917, "John Varner, Mary Bitts [John's wife], and Levi Varner [John Varner's
son who died 1850] were put in one grave. Anna Bitts [Catherine Golden's grandmother], William Bitts [her grandfather] and William Bates, were put in another grave. No stones and no dates--just names. William Bates (William H. Bates) was the husband of Anna Catherine Bitz, youngest sister of our Mary Bitz--William died before 1847. In
March 1999, Sam Tarr of Adrian, Pennsylvania, took this picture of the area where Lot 74,
Section E is located. He said the "center of picture is Grave plot of John
Varner and Mary Bitts."

Sam Tarr wrote on the back of this photo:
"Back of Varner Gravesite Freeport Cemetery."
It looks like the back of the Golden headstone. This is another good view, though,
of Freeport Cemetery.
