VARNER-JOHN-MARY-BITZ-L

Freeport Cemetery, Freeport Borough, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania

"To late" in German

From a 1912 periodical "the Christian Youth's Friend"

Copy of the 1903 newspaper article, "The Old Grave Yard, How It Is Cared For And List Of The Occupants,"  detailing the inhabitants of the old Freeport Cemetery before it was moved.   The Bitts, Varners, and Kuhns are mentioned in the article.

"Ancient Freeport Cemetery: 1794-1914"

Research by Robert Lucas, Tarentum, Pa.

Buried here are:  Levi d. 1850, John d. 1856, Mrs. Varner d. 12 November 1879, age 80, Infant Varner d. 1882 premature birth, b. Freeport

Flat tombstone near to the William and Catherine Golden tombstones

Small, horizontal, white marker next to the parents'  stone (William and Anna Catherine (Bitts) Golden)

This stone could have been transferred from the old cemetery and because of its proximity to the Golden tombstones (left of William Golden), could have belonged to John and Mary or Levi Varner or William and Anna Maria (Silvius) Bitts.

A gravestone rubbing project for the next Varner traveler to Freeport!

Also buried in Freeport Cemetery, Infant Varner, born premature, died September 21, 1882, born in Freeport

Picture thanks to Wayne Varner July 2006

Foreground, the unmarried Golden sisters' tombstone

Behind, tombstone of father William Golden on the left and mother Catherine Golden on the right

The above tombstone was about a foot away from the leftmost stone, William Golden's

Site of the graves of John and Mary (Bitts) Varner--no headstones

Per the Freeport Cemetery Sexton book, "the upper half of Lot 74, Section E" in the Freeport Cemetery was sold to Kate Golden, the lower half to a Ralph Nolf (unrelated).  In November 1917, there were 21 bodies moved from the old Freeport cemetery on 4th Street, Freeport, to the present-day cemetery.  When these bodies were moved by the Freeport Cemetery, the names were to be put in the Interment Book. Per Mabel, the Sexton [in 1917] must have been moonlighting. The names were only in the Sexton's Book but not in the Interment Book.  On November 16, 1917, "John Varner, Mary Bitts [John's wife], and Levi Varner [John Varner's son who died 1850] were put in one grave.  Anna Bitts [Catherine Golden's grandmother], William Bitts [her grandfather] and William Bates, were put in another grave.  No stones and no dates--just names.  William Bates (William H. Bates) was the husband of Anna Catherine Bitz, youngest sister of our Mary Bitz--William died before 1847.  In March 1999, Sam Tarr of Adrian, Pennsylvania, took this picture of the area where Lot 74, Section E is located.  He said the "center of picture is Grave plot of John Varner and Mary Bitts."

View of Freeport Cemetery

Sam Tarr wrote on the back of this photo:   "Back of Varner Gravesite Freeport Cemetery."
It looks like the back of the Golden headstone.  This is another good view, though, of Freeport Cemetery.

Catherine and Amelia (Golden), daughters of Anna Catherine (Bitts) Golden

Catherine and Amelia Golden

Anna Catherine (Bitts) Golden,
