Below and to the left of Frederick Varner's patent (#205) is Henry Shrum.  The 68 acres of land that John Varner purchased in 1831 was originally a part of land patented to Henry Shrum (patent #227).  To the bottom right of Henry Shrum's patent is George Mathias (patent #229).  John Varner was a witness in an 1828 court case of Joseph Wible v. William Bitts over a disputed 25 acres.  Joseph Wible has patent #245 below George Mathias.  Along with John Varner being a witness, a Michael Mathias, Solomon Waggoner, and a David Hepler were also witnesses--the disputed land was bordered, in 1828, by the lands of these three men.  A "George Waggoner et al." had patent #259, below Joseph Wible.    John Varner was also involved in litigation beginning in 1820.  He and David Hepler were sued by Solomon Wagner/Waggoner.
