Through various grantor deeds of the three sons of Nicholas
Silvius, Sr. (Jonas/Jonathan, Henry, Nicholas, Jr.), Nicholas Sr. owned, and later
left to two of his sons in his Will, land that was originally Warranted and Patented to
Adam Orey. This was Patent No. 126 which was on "Whitehorn Run."
Nicholas Jr. bought in 1797 and warranted what was ultimately Patent No. 78.
Nicholas did not patent this land. In addition, he bought another of Adam
Orey's warrants which ultimately became Patent No. 79. Both these tracts were
patented to John Meanor.

Patent No. 75 above (highlighted with blue) is the location of
the land William Bitz and Nicholas Silvius, Jr., bought from Jonathan Riggs in 1803.
Their land, the deed said, was part of a patent called Hartfield which adjoined lands of
James McClelland (#90) and Henry Evans (#73).

Regarding William Riddle, Patent No. 70 above, William Riddle
was sued by Jonas Silvius, brother-in-law of William Bitz in 1810. William Bitz was
also sued in 1810 by his brother-in-law, Jonas. It appeared William Bitz and his
family housed Jonas' daughter, Mary, paid for her schooling and doctor bills. At the
same time, William Riddle housed Mary's twin brother, Adam Silvius. It appears that
Jonas and his wife, Mary (Hamscher), sued both men for the return of their children.
William Riddle's patent is shown to illustrate the proximity to William Bitz' land.
William Bitz had sold his half of the land he owned jointly with brother-in-law
Nicholas Jr., back to Nicholas Jr. in 1807. In 1807, the deed said William Bitz was
"of Franklin Twp." |
