Scrapbook for Katy (Varner)

daughter Annie/Anna Jane (Varner) and William K. Hudson

Research by Lori Waters and Marie Robinson, 2006-2007

All headstone photos and abstracts from the Freeport Journal thanks to the kind generosity of
Alan Saltsman of Apollo, Pennsylvania

taken before Mary died in 1879--at least by 1870?

Through family information,* this picture shows Mary (Bitts) Varner with, on the left, "Tommy and Eddie."  (*Mabel Wirsing's conversations with her mother, Annie (Varner) Dorman, and whatever relative gave Mabel this picture.)

The 1850 census shows that Anna J. and Johnston C. were also in the John Varner, Sr., household.  Through the research and knowledge of the original Varner researchers, they believed that Anna J. and Johnston C. were not children of John and Mary (Bitts) Varner.  The researchers believed (or learned) that Tommy and Eddie were children of Anna Jane, granddaughter of John and Mary.

As Mary (Bitts) Varner died in 1879, Lori began her search with the 1870 census for a family with a mother named Anna or Jane and sons named Thomas or Edward.  She found the William Hudson family containing all the right facts (see 1870 census below).

As a result of tracing the William Hudson family through the subsequent census years and the generous help of Linda Mockenhaupt, a volunteer at the Mildred Lankerd Thomas Genealogy Library in Kittanning (the county seat of Armstrong County), (she found two very important clues for us:  (1) the headstone abstract for Anna Hudson naming her as Anna Varner Hudson and (2) William K. Hudson's obituary which led us to Daisy Davis), the below information is what has been found to date (3/2006) on the Hudsons and their descendants.

We found through Genealogy.com's World Family Tree a present-day descendant of Tommy Hudson in Ohio, which gave us three additional generations of Tommy Hudson's descendants.

And, through the kind generosity of Alan Saltsman of Apollo, Pa., we not only have pictures of the headstones of Jane Varner Hudson and her husband, William K. (below) but pictures of all the Hudsons and Davis' buried in McVille Cemetery, and the abstracts of obituary and marriage notices of the Hudsons from 1879 to 1900.  In addition, thanks to Alan, we found a photocopy of Mary's obituary from the Freeport Journal, which is on John and Mary's page.

We believe that Jane is actually the daughter of John and Mary.  Jane's headstone indicates her maiden name as Varner.

Research has not yet brought us closer to discovering what happened to Johnston C.  There is a very good possibility that Johnstone C. was a son of John and Mary.

The Hudson descendants to date (3/2006) thanks to Lori's research and information from a present-day descendant of little Tommy Hudson!

1850 Census--Anna J. with John and Mary.
  1860 Census--Hudsons not found

1870 Census, 8 July 1870, South Buffalo Township, Armstrong County, Pa., William Hudson (33) Cooper, Jane (28) Keeping House, Thomas (9), Edward (7)

1880 Census, 14 June 1880, South Buffalo Township, Armstrong County, Pa., William (46) Boatman, Jane A. (36), Thomas (19) Laborer,  Edward (17) Laborer, Frances J. (3)
  1890 Census--burned

The microfilm copy of the Armstrong County Death Register begins with the year 1893 so a copy of Jane's death register is not possible--unless the records on file at Armstrong County contain records before 1893.  This record would have named her father's name and possibly her mother's first name and maiden name which would have conclusively indicated if Jane was a sister or niece of the Varner brothers.  Her son, Thomas' death certificate indicates Jane's maiden name as Varner.

The only other documentation that would prove Jane as a child of John and Mary (Bitts) Varner would be the baptism of Jane in 1842 or later.

See John and Mary's page for further information on the subject of later baptisms.

8 July 1892, Anna Jane died.  Her tombstone:  Jane Varner Hudson 1842-1892 [buried beside William], McVille Union Cemetery (Presbyterian), Armstrong County, Pa.
