It is said that the man may be William Henry Varner,
son of Solomon from his first marriage.

I believe Alice is William Henry's daughter. William's wife, Ellen (Sullivan) died before 1900 and I suspect they had a child and William's sister, Mattie, took care of little Alice, with the help of Matt's mother, Amelia, stepmother of William.
