Dougald MacFarlane (M)
b. circa 1720, d. after 1813, #36
Pop-up Pedigree

His birthplace is said to have been Druim Lighart. Druim Lighart is a site not marked on the Ordnance Survey map, but it is close to the line of the modern West Highland Way as it swings past Inveroran and on towards Victoria Bridge and the old military road to Glen Coe.

"His parents and all his people were Presbyterians. Dougald was a precocious lad and at the head of his class in school. There is a family tradition that the stories told him by his pastor, when teaching him his catechism, had something to do with his change in religion....

When Dougald had finished his school days in "Gleann Urchaidh" he left home and shaped his course toward the north and west. He was soon engaged as schoolteacher in one of the districts of Knoydart. While in this situation the blue eyes of a neighboring Cloe took possession of his imagination and inspired his day-dreams. Margaret MacDonell, who had made him her captive, was possessed in her proper person of the graces and goodly gifts that generally play havoc with the mental fortifications of bards and pedagogues. Besides, she belonged to one of the best families in the district; she was a daughter of "Fear Chrolem", and granddaughter of the Laird of the Scots - septs of the Glengarry family. She was a sister to the famous Colonel John MacDonell, "Spanish John" as he was called in Canada, who died in Cornwall, Ontario, in 1820.

Dougald MacFarlane was married in Knoydart, Scotland, to Margaret MacDonell, and was received into the Church at the same time."

Dougald and Margaret's children were born and raised in Glenfinnan. But this was a time of great disruption in the Highlands. "In one year alone fifty-four emigrant ships sailed from the western sealochs. Though some of the emigrants were the families of soldiers who had fought in the Americas, and who had chosen to settle there on grants of land, most were led and organized by small tackmen who wished to escape the rack-renting of their chiefs. - - - A growing population, a decaying economy, recurrent famines and bitter poverty made exile inevitable for increasing numbers. - - -

From the beginning the emigrants were the victims of speculators and ship masters, of typhus, cholera and dysentery. - - -

One of the most successful contractors was George Dunoon of Fort William who, with his partners, made a comfortable fortune shipping Glengarry and Strathglass people across the Atlantic to Pictou in Nova Scotia. - - -

Conditions aboard the emigrant ships were seldom better than abominable - - -.

In the summer of 1801, George Dunoon advertised the sailing of the Sarah and the Dove from Fort William to Pictou. Had the laws then governing slave-ships applied to these emigrant vessels they would not have been allowed to carry more than 489 passengers. Dunoon filled the tiny holds with 700, emigrants from Lord Reay's country, from the clan-lands of Seaforth, Fraser and Cameron. If they believed his promise that in Nova Scotia they would find a tree that supplied fuel, soap and sugar (he probably meant the maple) they may have found the nightmare voyage endurable, but it is unlikely. Forty-nine people died on the Sarah alone, and the suffering of all was so terrible that it was remembered in Nova Scotia for more than a century."

"He [Dougald] and his family came to America in the year 1801, in the "Dove of Aberdeen". The parents, with the younger members of the family, remained at the Gulf, while the grownup boys were preparing a home for them at the South River. They had a family of four sons and five daughters.

Among the first settlers at South River was Dougald MacFarlane."2,3,4 Dougald MacFarlane was also known in Gaelic as Dhughall MacPhadruig 'ic Phadraig 'ic Iain 'ic Illechriosd 'ic Iain.5 He was born circa 1720 at Glenorchy, Scotland.3 He was the son of Peter MacFarlane.1 He married Margaret MacDonell circa 1775 at Knoydart, Invernessshire, Scotland.3,1,6 Dougald MacFarlane died after 1813 at Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada.7

Margaree Harbor, formerly South River.
There died at Margaree Harbor on the 20th of Oct. 1892, John McFarlane, commonly known as John the Post. He was born at the South River of Antigonish in the year 1812, whence he moved with his parents to Margaree in 1826. When quite young, he was awarded the contract of carrying the mails, weekly on foot, from Mabou to Margaree Harbor, a distance of forty miles. He was a good walker and even when over seventy years of age, he would prefer going long distances on foot to troubling himself with a horse and wagon. How often we saw him passing by with a light step, a broad scotch bonnet on his head and a tartan plaid carefully folded around his graceful person!
Though never a hard worker, he made his way through life honestly and decently and his cheerful, guileless ways, his amusing, harmless jokes even his hearty laugh, secured for him hosts of friends where ever he moved. He reared a family of six sons and daughters, all of whom survive him. His widow, a daughter of the late Alex McNeil, Broad Cove is still quite hearty, and to her as well as to the rest of the family, we extend our sympathy in their bereavement.9 Catherine died after 1897 at Margaree Harbor, Inverness, Nova Scotia, Canada.10,7,11 She is mentioned in the obituary of Captain John MacFarlane at The Casket, Antigonish, Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada; Captain John McFarlane     51                    46-1897-11-5

When his father succeeded to Glengarry, Angus, as eldest son, succeded to Scotus. He is represented as being a retired, quiet man, unfit to lead the Clan, and there is a tradition that Lord MacDonald made choice of Angus's brother, Alasdair Dubh to succeed him with the consent of all parties. Alexander undoubtedly led the Clan in the lifetime of his father, though Angus, not Alexander, was the eldest son.1 His common name was Angus.      The lands of Scotus consisted originally of 12 1/2 penny lands, being part of the 60 penny lands of Knoydart. Donald M'Angus bestowed these lands of Scotus by feu charter upon his son, Donald Gorm.

"The particular description ran thus: - The four penny and half penny lands of Scotos; ane pennyland of Torroray; one penny and one half penny land of Inverie-beg; one penny land of Shennachie; one penny land of Angrugaig and Teaflich; two penny and one half penny land of Glendulochan, comprehending Penvoit; Penvoir, and the one penny land of Dornach; half penny land of Torbruiach; and half penny land of Corrleatach, all lying in Killichniman of Glenelg. These lands were held in feu of Glengarry for the sum of £3 0s 6d, being apparently the exact one paid by Glengarry for the whole of Knoydart to the Duke of Argyle, over superior.
Donald Gorm raised many of the MacDonalds in aid of Alasdair MacDonald [MacColla], who joined the Marquis of Montrose during the Civil War.1,2,3 His common name was Donald Gorm.
