At S. W. Margaree, 8th May, 1907, after a few month's illness, Malcolm MacFarlane (Big), aged 95 years. He was born at South River, Antigonish, in March 1812 and moved with his father's family to a farm at S. W. Chapel in 1822, where he passed the rest of his life, a period of 85 years His career, like that of the generality of farmers, to the human eye appears uneventful.. But the fruits and the far reaching effects of 85 years of unremitting, honest intelligent labor are known only to his maker. "Big Malcolm's" name was always associated with every progressive movement in school, parish and district work, he would always be found in the front ranks and was often their trusted, chosen leader. His hospitality & cheerful disposition were proverbial and oh! how we shall miss the venerable presence, his hearty laugh as well as his fund of interesting anecdotes which seemed inexhaustible. He was twice married, first to Catherine Gillis of Morar, Scotland, by whom he had 5 children. The second time to Sarah McLellan of the South West, by whom he had ten children. His grand and great grand children are numerous and there is one great, great grand child.

Margaree Harbor, formerly South River.
There died at Margaree Harbor on the 20th of Oct. 1892, John McFarlane, commonly known as John the Post. He was born at the South River of Antigonish in the year 1812, whence he moved with his parents to Margaree in 1826. When quite young, he was awarded the contract of carrying the mails, weekly on foot, from Mabou to Margaree Harbor, a distance of forty miles. He was a good walker and even when over seventy years of age, he would prefer going long distances on foot to troubling himself with a horse and wagon. How often we saw him passing by with a light step, a broad scotch bonnet on his head and a tartan plaid carefully folded around his graceful person!
Though never a hard worker, he made his way through life honestly and decently and his cheerful, guileless ways, his amusing, harmless jokes even his hearty laugh, secured for him hosts of friends where ever he moved. He reared a family of six sons and daughters, all of whom survive him. His widow, a daughter of the late Alex McNeil, Broad Cove is still quite hearty, and to her as well as to the rest of the family, we extend our sympathy in their bereavement.

There died, at S. W. Margaree on the 19th day of Dec. last, John MacFarlane Esq. Sr., miller, in the 84th year of his age. Deceased was born in Antigonish County, and when 18 years of age came with his parents and the rest of his family to Margaree, and bought the farm known as the Chapel farm. He was the oldest son in his family, and when 21 he and his brother Angus (who survives him) took up homesteads near the Outlet, and they are today the best looking farms in North Inverness. He met with many losses in his early days of housekeeping. In the space of three years he lost by fire two beautiful houses, a large barn full of hay and wheat, together with eighteen head cattle, and a pair of horses. He was always remarkable for his coolness and discretion. When his last house was burned he was working in the woods and hurried home with his broad axe on his shoulder. When assured of the safety of his family from the flames, he turned to the few people present and said "plenty wood in Cape Breton to make another house". He was the confidential crony of the late lamented Sir Wm. Young in his campaign in this county and was the leader of the 500 Scots who marched to Cheticamp in 1832, with their banners floating in the breeze, and the sound of the pibroch rending the air, stirring the hearts of the gallant sons of Albion, but also terrorized the sons of Gaul, there was no resistance given. The day passed quietly, and on the pole being closed, Young was elected and Smith defeated. The deceased addressed his followers in Gaelic and concluded by asking the pipers "Cluich nise failta phrionnsa". He was a genuine, true and noble Highlander. His home was the home of the poor, he was a man of few words, and many deeds, to the needy, the widows, and the orphans, he delighted to give; and with the sorrowing he was an everready sympathizer. As a citizen he did his duty conscientiously, faithfully and without ostentation. As a Christian he was always at the post of duty, and everready to do and give for the good of the church and his fellow man; and as a husband and a father while strict to duty and true to conviction, he ruled in love, with that beaming kindness and cheerful attention, that made home the greatest blessing, an earthly attraction to his family. He left his family in very comfortable circumstances. He was buried in St. Andrew's cemetery and his funeral was attended by an emmense assemblage of friends who showed their esteem of his character and talents, by unfeigned sorrow of his passing.

McFarlane, D. H. 89-1941-38-10
Well-Known Journalist Is Mourned
Glace Bay, March 10 - Death early today wrote "30" to the career of D. H. (Doug) McFarlane, one of the province's best known newspapermen and sports authorities. He died his at home here a few hours after suffering a stroke as he was about to leave his office at the end of the Sunday night "trick."
A native of Southwest Margaree, he was 51 years of age and the greater part of his life had been spent at the work he loved so well. He got his start in Sydney with the Old Daily Post as a mere youth, selling papers and working around the newsroom before the turn of the century.
When his parents moved to Glace Bay about 1900 he secured work at the Gazette there, remainig for 17 years before retiring to take over management of the Arcade bowling alleys and recreation centre here, a position he held until 1927 when he joined the Post Publidhing Company, remaining with that firm until his death when he was its representative in the Glace Bay colliery districts.
An authority on most sports his column "news and views" - published for the last time today - was widely read. Of all activities his favorite one was horse racing, followed, especially in later years, by hockey, baseball and boxing.
His ability as a reporter, accentuated by his natural integrity and honesty won for him uncounted friends and followers throughout this Island as well as the rest of Nova Scotia.
Among the sporting ventures he promoted was the famed Cape Breton marathon in 1926, which drew the largest attendance of any event staged here - a total of 6,742 persons paid admission and internationally known runners took part.
He was also associated with the original Miners hockey team as manager for several years and under his direction the club captured the Cruise cup, emblamatic of the Maritime championship.
Taken ill last fall as he started out on a vacation Mr. MacFarlane hovered between life and death for nearly two months before recovering and regaining strength. He returned to his desk in December.
Fearing a recurrance of the illness he had planned to enter St. joseph's hospital today for an examination and further treatment and went to his office Sunday afternoon, as had been his custom for years, to make sure his column was ready for Monday.
Shortly before midnight as he had called a taxi to retun home he was seized with the stroke, dying several hours later. He was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church and active in its affairs.
News of his passing spread rapidly throughout the colliery districts he had served for so long as well as to other parts of Cape Breton and residents tonight mourned the loss of one of their best boosters and supporters.
Numerous tributes were paid to his memory by leading Island citizens and others as the day wore on.
Surviving besides his wife are a daughter, Beatrice McFarlane and four sons: Alvin, Mathew Bruce and Charles McFarlane, all of Glace Bay; his mother Mrs. C. McFarlane: four sisters: Mrs. H. V. MacGillvray, Saint John, N.B.; Mrs. R. Langley and Mary McFarlane, Hiland, Ind.; Mrs. V. Roache, Hammond, Ind.; and a step-brother, Luke Mc Farlane, in Detroit.

MacFarlane, John J. 72 77-1929-41-2
At Lower Springfield, Ant. Co., N. S., on Feb. 28, 1929, the flu claimed another victim and left a vacancy which can never be filled when John J. MacFarlane, aged 72 years, passed away as peacefully as he had lived, after being fortified by the last rites of the Catholic Church of which he has always been a devote member. On March 2, after high mass of requiem, his remains, in the presence of a large number of friends, were tenderly laid to rest beside those of his three children at South River cemetery. Rev. john R. MacDonald, P.P., officiated at the church and grave. The deceased left to morn him his devoted wife, one sister, Mrs. John b. MacPherson, Lower Springfield; and two brothers, William at Lower South River, and Angus in Alaska; besides a host of relatives and friends. He had no enimies, for his motto was "live and let live," and moreover to lend a helping hand wherever it was needed. The loss of his wee sons did not lessen his faith in a merciful God, or his love for humanity; on the contrary, he opened his generous heart and home to a number of children, and brought them up to be useful citizens, teaching them by example in his own tactful way how to live and be ever ready for the final summons. His loved ones will continue to carry on, and their grief will be assuaged by the thought that he merited the most honorable title this world can bestow, "a good man," and also eternal reward in heaven.

IN MEMORIUM
On October 2, 1946, Almighty God deemed it fitting to call to Eternal Rest the

resignation. Deceased was the daughter of Malcolm MacFarlane, of S. W. Margaree,
and was in the 55th year of her age. Everything that medical skill and tender
nursing care could do was done for her, but in vain. During her illness she
frequently received the sacraments of Holy Church of which was always a true
and devoted adherent. She lived a beautiful life and died a beautiful death,
consoled by the last rites of the Church and surrounded by her family and a
number of friends. She leaves a disconsolate husband, one son and four daughters,
together with a host of friends to mourn the loss of a faithful wife and affectionate
mother, and a true Christian woman whose death leaves a void that can never
be filled. May her soul rest in peace.
