My great-great-great grandfather,
Thomas William ILIFF (b. 1829) was the son of William ILIFF (b. 1788)
& Elizabth COOPER (b. 1790) - a copy of their marriage licence is to the
right. This family was in Crick, Northampton England in the late
1700's and early 1800's. William ILIFF (b. 1788) was the son
of John ILIFF and Mary MARSON. Elizabeth COOPER (b. 1790) was the
daughter of Thomas COOPER and Martha BUCKNELL. |

Descendants of John Iliff
John ILIFF married Mary MARSON December 25, 1781 in Crick. Mary was buried at Crick on 21 Jan 1821 at the age of 57 years.
Children of JOHN ILIFF and MARY MARSON are:
i. Sarah ILIFF, baptized 23 March 1783, Crick, Northumberland.
ii. Thomas ILIFF, b. 1784.
- Thomas married Emma [maiden name unknown]. Thomas & Emma had a son John ILIFF who was baptized at Crick in Dec of 1813 and who was buried at Crick on 26 Feb 1815 at the age of 15 months. Emma died in 1814 and was buried at Crick on 13 Nov 1814 at the age of 27.
- There is a death reg for a Thomas Iliff in 1856 [June 1856 Rugby 6d pg 220] but I have not yet found him in the 1841 or 1851 censuses.
- Also, there was a Thomas ILIFF of Crick who married an Elizabeth ILIFF of this parish, 1816 Rugby St Andrew Warwick, by license [ref http://www.northants1841.fsnet.co.uk/northants%20strays.htm]
- there was also a George ILIFF, s/o Ann CAPELL & Thomas ILIFF baptised in Crick in 1916 but I have found no marriage record for this couple yet.
iii. Mary ILIFF, baptized 16 Oct 1786, Crick, buried February 08, 1855 at Crick at the age of 68 years. In the 1851 census she is unmarried, and living with her brother Joseph in Kilsby.
iv. William ILIFF, baptized 18 May 1788 in Crick; d. September 23, 1844, Crick, Northamptonshire.
- William married Elizabeth COOPER on 29 Sept 1825 in Crick, the daughter of Thomas COOPER & Martha BUCKNELL.
- William was a farmer & according to his death reg he died of disease of the heart at age 56. The informant on the death reg was Thomas William Iliff, son.
- In the 1851 & 1861 censuses, Elizabeth nee Cooper was a widow in Crick

- with them in the 1871 census is: Emily E. WEDDING, age 22, draperess, b. Crick
- 1881 census: 2 Woodstock Terrace, Lee, Kent, England, provision dealer
- 1891 census: Manor Park Bridge, Little Ilford, East Ham, Essex Co with occupation given as traveller in monumental works, no children at home

1. Elizabeth Saunders LUMLEY, born about 1853 in Harleston. She married Thomas Gans ACKLAND in 1877. In the 1881 ccensus they were at 26 Cambria Rd in Lambeth where Thomas was an actuary accountant. No children in 1881. [Marriage reg June 1877 Rugby vol 6d pg 725]
2. Frank Iliff LUMLEY, born about 1859 in Harleston. He married Ellen [maiden name unknown] & they had a son Eric Iliff LUMLEY in 1897, born in Brixton London
- 1891 census: Frank was an ironmonger, visiting household of Henry & Alice PRATT in Putney [Alice was his sister]
- 1901 census: ironmonger, Lambeth London
3. Alice Martha LUMLEY born about 1865. She married Henry Lewis PLATT in 1890 & they had a son Adrian Dennis PLATT in 1900 [Dec 1900 Croydon vol 2a pg 245]
ii. Thomas William ILIFF, baptized 15 March 1829 at Crick Northamptonshire; d. before 1877; m. Maria Jane HUNT, October 08, 1863, York Co., Ontario.

v. Fanny ILIFF was born 1790 in Crick. She married Matthew HOWARD, of Preston Capes Northants., March 30, 1812 in Crick, in the presence of John SMITH & John COWLEY.
Children of Fanny ILIFF and Matthew HOWARD are:
i. Jane HOWARD, b. 1814, Preston Capes, Northants..
ii. Mary Iliff HOWARD, b. 1821, Preston Capes, Northants.; m. George FABRY, December 1841, Basingstoke, Hampshire England. George & Mary had at least 3 children: Hannah FABRY b. 1848 in Thatcham Berkshire, Matthew FABRY b. 1856 in Stratfield Saye Hampshire and Mary F. FABRY b. 1858 in Reading Berkshire.
Matthew FABRY married Ellen [maiden name unknown] and they had at least 2 children: Louisa Ellen b. abt 1877 and Frank b. abt 1880. In the 1881 census they were in Whitchurch Berkshire where Matthew was a postman. The children's birthplace was given as Whitchurch Oxford.
vi. Edward ILIFF was baptized in Jan of 1792 in Crick, and died September 1841 (buried 14 Sept) in Crick. He married Elizabeth [maiden name unknown]

- Thomas died in 1866 shortly after his youngest son was born.

- Powers Cowley ILIFF, born in Abertystwith Wales 1864 - moved to Springfield Manitoba where he married Anne MATHESON in 1891. Powers arrived in Quebec City in June 1885 aboard the ship Circassion. In the 1881 census Powers was a farm servant in Bangor - Caernarvon Wales. Powers & Ann had 5 children (all 5 are in the 1906 census in Hazel Ridge): Thomas Charles (1891-1918), Christena McBeth ILIFF (1893 - 1917, married George Murdoch ARGLE on 26/10/1910), William Matheson Rees ILIFF (7 May 1896 - 1918), Alexander James (b. 1899) and John Owen Houghton ILIFF b. 1903. - His wifes name was Elizabeth (age 30 in 1901, born Tranmere) and their son was Thomas, (age under 7 months in 1901, born Tranmere). Free BMD has marriage of Llewelyn William ILIFF to Elizabeth Mary FURNISS, [June 1898 Birkenhead vol 8a pg 843]
- FreeBMD also has birth of Thomas Houghton ILIFF [Sept 1900 Birkenhead vol 8a pg 556]
- Llewellyn William ILIFF married Clarice Inglis LEEDS in Australia in 1919 and he died in Melbourne Australia in 1933

As an aside, Sarah & Zophar (Lophar?) are in Holywell, Flint Wales in the 1881 census where Zophar is "(Music and Surveyor) Inspector of Nuisances" (online 1881 census) and they have a daughter Eleanor Sarah age 8 (b. Aberystwyth Wales)
ii. William ILIFF, born about 1829, with his widowed mother in the 1871 census (but not there in 1841 & 1851???). Born Kilsby, drapers assistant. In the 1881 census there is a William ILIFF, draper, in Birchville Rugby, age 42, born Kilsby, with wife Eliza Maria age 39, born Gloucester, no children.

viii. Joseph ILIFF, b. about 1798 (baptised 11 Feb 1798); buried at Crick February 05, 1847. His residence at the time of death was Kilsby Northants. according to Crick parish records. His death reg is Mar 1847, Rugby, vol 16, pg 396. I haven’t yet found him in the 1841 census.

In the 1851 census, Henrietta is 14, and the next child is Helen age 4 (child of 2nd wife)
