Descendants of Thomas William Iliff
THOMAS WILLIAM ILIFF, son of William & Elizabeth , was born Abt. 1831 in Northamptonshire England, and died Bef. 1877. He married MARIA JANE HUNT on 8 Oct. 1863, daughter of JOSEPH & MARIA HUNT. At the time of the marriage, Thomas was living in Whitchurch twp., York Co. and Maria was a resident of King twp. Maria Jane HUNT had been baptised in the Methodist church on 3 July 1843. In the 1871 census, Thomas (age 40) and Maria are living in King twp., York Co.(dist 43, sub A, div 1, pg 71)
After the death of Thomas, Maria re-married in 1877. At that time she was a resident of Yorkville (which is where the wedding was). She married Leumas GOULD who was born in England in about 1845. Witnesses at this marriage were Morton HATCHARD & Elizabeth MORLEY of Yorkville. Leumas was born in England about 1845, the son of Samuel & Caroline A. HEATH (who were both born in India, according to Leumas's entry in the 1891 census - incorrectly as it turns out). Leumas died in 1910 and he is buried in Mt. Pleassant cemetery, Toronto. Maria died of cancer on 7 Feb 1930 and is also buried in Mt. Pleasant cemetery (plot J-21-4).... residence of her next-of-kin was given as 4 Ridley Blvd.
Leumas GOULD's mother, Caroline HEATH was born at Cape of Good Hope, South Africa. His father was born in England. Leumas was born 14 Nov 1844 in England (after his parents were married there in 1842). Leumas had one brother.
Maria's death notice appeared in the Toronto Star, 8 Feb 1930: "GOULD - At the home of her daughter, Mrs. J.L. NICHOLL, 4 Ridley Blvd., on Fri. Feb 7th, Maria Jane GOULD, widow of the late Leumas GOLD [sic], Esq., in her 90th year. Funeral from the above address on Mon. Feb. 10th at 2:30 p.m. Interment Mount Pleasant cemetery."

ii. WILLIAM ILIFF, b. Abt. 1866, King twp., Ontario; m. (1) ELIZABETH WESTWOOD, October 03, 1888 (Elizabeth died in 1890 at the age of 26, of typhoid) Toronto; m. (2) MAGGIE BUDREO, November 25, 1896, Toronto (she was a resident of Alliston in 1896). At the time of both his marriages, William was a carpenter in Toronto. The witness at his first wedding were George McQUILLAN & Fannie WESTWOOD, both of Toronto. At his second marriage they were Anna B Turnbull & Minnie Cobeau also both of Toronto. In the 1890 Toronto Directory William appears as a carpenter, 786 King St. West. In the 1891 census, William was a widower (no apparent children), living with his mother & Leumas Gould in Toronto

iii. CECIL BARTLE ILIFF, b. 1869; d. January 22, 1889, Toronto. Was living at home in the 1881 census. Short death notice in the Toronto 'Evening Telegram' of Tues. 22nd Jan., "On the 22nd of January, 1889, at 223 Borden St., Cecil B. Iliff on the 21st year of his age. Funeral 2:30 Thursday."
iv. FRANKIE V. ILIFF, b. Abt. 1871, King twp., Ontario; m. William Charles OLIVER, June 01, 1892, St. Simons church (C of E), Toronto. Witnesses at the marriage were Mattie ILIFF & Allan A. MARK of Toronto. Both Frankie & William were residents of Toronto. William OLIVER was born in 1865 in Frome, Ontario, son of William & Nancy. In the 1881 census, William & Nancy OLIVER are in Southwold twp., Elgin Co where William Jr. is the oldest child at home, at age 15. Younger siblings are, Laura, Clara, John, Archibald and Alice.
Child of William & Frances is Arthur Stanley OLIVER who died 25 April 1919, private in the 83rd Bn., Canadian Infantry (Manitoba Regt.). In 1919, Wm & Frances were living at 143 Lawton Boulevard in Toronto. Arthur's birth reg (29445-95) gives his name as Arthur Stanley Iliff OLIVER & his mother's name as Henrietta Frances ILIFF. William OLIVER was an electrician at the time & they were living at 222 McCaul St. in Toronto
v. MARTHA ALICE ILIFF, b. Abt. 1874; m. THOMAS ALEX STRATTON TELFER, March 04, 1896, Toronto. The witnesses at the wedding were Estelle TELFER & Leeman GOULD, both of Toronto. In 1896 THOMAS ALEX STRATTON TELFER was an insurance agent and a resident of Ottawa. Thomas died of diphtheria in the fall of 1896 and is buried at Mt. Pleasant cemetery in Toronto with his mother & with Martha's mother & step-father. Martha re-married on 2 Dec 1903 (in Toronto) to John L. NICHOL who was born in Sutton, s/o Robert NICHOL & Agnes LATIMER - he was a cutter, living in Toronto.
Marriage announcement in the Toronto 'Telegram' of Sat. 7th March: " At Holy Trinity, on Wednesday, March 4th, 1896, by the Rev. Dr. PEARSON M.A., assisted by Canon MOCKRIDGE D.D., Martha A., youngest daughter of the late Thomas W. Iliff Esq., of Crick Northamptonshire England, to Thomas A.S. TELFER, of Ottawa, youngest son of the late P.N. TELFER and grandson of the late John MASON, Quebec, Asst. Commissariat Generals respectively."
- Martha & John NICHOL (spelled Nicoll?) had a son, Cecil, who was born in Toronto in 1905. Cecil married Bernice Sedden and they had two sons, Peter & John.
Thomas's death notice was in both the Ottawa Citizen and the Toronto Evening News on 27 Nov., 1896. Ottawa paper: " Telfer - At 4 Ann St. East, Thomas A. Telfer, youngest s/o the late Assistant commissary-General, P.N. Telfer of Quebec. The remains will be conveyed to Toronto this morning for burial." The Toronto newspaper has same first sentence, but ends with: " Funeral from 103 Gerrard St. East Toronto on Sat. at 3 p.m., to Holy Trinity Church, thence to Mt. Pleasant cemetery."
Thomas TELFER was the s/o Patrick Nagel TELFER & Gaetanna MASON. Patrick was with the British Army, as Assistant Commissary - General (at least in 1851). On 16 Dec 1845 he was posted to Quebec. Gaetanna MASON was born 27 Sept 1820, d/o John who was also an Assistant Commissary - General posted in Quebec. Gaetanna's first husband was R. HOOGS who was with the Bank of Montreal in Quebec, and they had a son Edward Remlyer HOOGS born 18 Aug 1846 in Quebec City. Edward died of old age at the Aged Mens Home in Toronto on 30 Dec 1924 (death reg # 7055-1924); his occupation was given as printer. His wife's name was Lizzie A., born December 13, 1849 and died January 28, 1917 (buried at Mt. Pleasant cemetery in Toronto).
Gaetanna & Patrick TELFER had at least 3 children. Thomas mentioned above is the only son known. A Miss Catherine TELFER was the owner of the Mt. Pleasant cemetery plot (Toronto) where Gaetanna and Thomas are buried - nothing else is known about Catherine. Another daughter was Marie Estella TELFER was born in Quebec about 1877, but was a resident of Toronto in October of 1899 when she married Louis Adolph QUIMET (Ouimet?) of Montreal. Louis was born in Montreal about 1869, s/o Adolph QUIMET & Adelaide L. HUSSIER (marriage reg # 2439-99, in Toronto). Witnesses at the wedding were F. GIBSON & Martha A. TELFER (widow of Thomas).
