Joseph WRIGLEY was born August 1778 in (perhaps) Mossley, Lancashire England, and died July 12, 1854 in Vergennes, Michigan. He married Ann FEARN(S) on January 17, 1805 in St. Michaels, Ashton Under Lyne, England, daughter of Sylvanus FEARNS and Peggy MILLER. Ann had been christened 2 March 1786, at St. Michaels, Ashton Under Lyne

Joseph's parents are still unknown. I have been planning to check the parish records for St. Michaels to see if parents names are given there. In 1826 the family settled in a part Dumfries twp known as "Wrigleys Corners", having been in NY state for a few years previous (1819-1826). The farm at Wrigley's Corners passed first to his son Sylvanus and then to his grandson Joseph until it was sold to a Russell Bannister in 1921. "In 1834 a tiny log school was built near the Seventh Con Rd, but it is said formal schooling was carried on in the home of the first Joseph Wrigley even before that." (From: Our Yesterdays) In 1854 this log school burned, and was replaced by a red brick building that was constructed on a half-acre plot of land purchased from the Wrigley family. It survived for one hundred years. This was U.S.S. No. 16 at Wrigley's Corners.

In the 1840's Joseph & Ann moved to Michigan state with son George and daughter Sarah, and their families. Joseph died in 1854 (12 July) and the age on his tombstone is 75 years, 11 months. He and Ann are buried in Alton, Vergennes Co., Michigan. Ann died in 1864 (31 Aug) an the age on her tombstone reads 78 years, 6 months, 9 days

Sylvanus Fearn, b. 1814, near Manchester, England; d. June 1889, Ayr, Ontario. He married Isabella STODDARD February 16, 1844 in Dumfries twp., Ontario, daughter of George & unknown. See part 3

George Fearn, b. June 04, 1822; d. June 24, 1854, Vergennes, Kent Co, Michigan. He married Janet FRASER March 19, 1847 in Dumfries twp., Ontario, daughter of John FRASER & Ann McINTOSH. See part 4

In the 1842 census of Dumfries twp, they appear on lot 34, con 4, as a family of 6 people 1 born England, 4 born Canada and 1 born USA but in Canada 22 years. Also, children in this census are given as: 2 girls under 5, 2 boys 5-14.

Walter's family had been from New York state and they had come to Ontario about 1820. This family then appears in both the 1850 and 1860 US censuses in Vergennes twp., Kent Co., Michigan where Walter was a farmer.

Sylvanus:

1838, 25 Jan, jailed in Hamilton after being taken aboard the Caroline, freed March 31 (Rebellion of 1837).

In the 1871 census he appears as a 55 year old farmer in North Dumfries twp while in the 1881 census he is a 66 year old builder, also in North Dumfries twp. He lived on farm at Wrigleys Corners for 50+ years, then retired to Ayr abt 1877 according to his obituary. He was also the tax collector for N. Dumfries twp for 17- 20 years. He died in 1889 and is buried at buried at Ayr cemetery with his wife and daughters. His will, filed at Surrogate Court of Ont., record # 2174, Ont Archives microfilm names his wife Isabella as his sole executor & beneficiary.

1904 April 2 Saturday, Sylvanus WRIGLEY has resigned his position at the supply office of the Calumet and Hecla mining company, and left yesterday for Traverse City, Michigan, where he will be employed by the Grand Union Tea company. George b. Abt. 1852, Ontario, Canada; d (& is buried) in Winnipeg, 14 Jan 1907. He married Sarah Elizabeth WESTON, November 30, 1871, London, Ontario. In the 1871 census, George was age 20, a store clerk in Galt. On his marriage registration (in vol 22, pg 465) he was a teacher in what appears to be Glenmorris. In 1872 he is still a teacher, but in Branchton in N. Dumfries. Then, in 1875 he was living at 527 Richmond St., London, Ontario and his occupation is given as agent. There is a lengthy article about him in the Dictionary of Canadian Biography, vol ?, pages 1111 to 1115, although they give his birth date as 24 June 1847 and they call him George Weston Wrigley, which is actually the name of his son.

In the 1881 census, George and Sarah are living in Wallaceburg, Kent Co. along with two chilren, Edward age 8 and George age 6.

Sarah was a teacher in London in 1871. In 1909 she was living with son Rowcliffe/Roy at 411 Langside, Winnipeg and she was president of the Winnipeg District WCTU. Sarah was born about 1850, the daughter of Peter WESTON & Emma BYFIELD. Peter WESTON was born in England in 1819 and died in 1897 in Chicago, but is buried in London. He & Emma were married in Toronto on 21 May 1846. Their other children: Louisa (b. about 1848, married Capt. M.M. NESBITT of Woodstock on 4 March 1872, in Toronto), Thomas Edward (b. about 1853), William Henry (b. about 1856), E. Ida (b. about 1862) and Edward O. (b. about 1870)

George Weston, b. May 02, 1875, London, Ontario; d. August 1944, Toronto, Ontario. He married Edith Eleanor ROBINSON June 04, 1902 in Toronto, daughter of George ROBINSON and Eleanor MAEUR (spelling?). Edith was born about 1880. Witnesses at the marriage were G.H. ROBINSON, Harry MARSH & Bessie O. ROBINSON.... George & Edith had two children: A daughter who married a Gordon GALBRAITH & a son, George Bernard who was born in 1907. George Weston WRIGLEY's obituary was in the Toronto Globe on 5 Aug., 1944 (see below)

Edward Sylvanus, b. September 14, 1872, Branchton, N. Dumfries twp, Waterloo Co., Ontario; m. Clara Louise BRAKE (or Boake), May 21, 1903, Toronto. The witnesses at wedding: Francis THIRSK & T.P. STRATTON. In 1909 their address was 268 Ellice St., Winnipeg, Manitoba; In 1917 it was 201 Robert St. (St. Charles), Winnipeg; In 1921, still at Robert St., but Edward's occupation is now publisher; In 1934, pensioner, living at 292 Aldine in Winnipeg. Clara Louise was the treasurer of the Central WCTU, Winnipeg, in both 1909 and 1934.

Rowcliffe Fearns. b. 19 Jan 1885 in Wallaceburg, Kent Co., Ontario (reg # 15741-85); m. Berlie Chridella NICHOLSON in 1908 (17 June). (may have the spelling of her name wrong!) Rowcliffe also appears as Roy. In 1908 Rowcliffe was at 411 Langside, Winnipeg and his occupation is given as adv. manager. In the 1909 directory of Winnipeg, he is advertisement solicitor for Henderson Directories

In 1908 Berlie was a resident of Toronto. She was born about 1884, d/o John NICHOLSON & Bessie SAUNDERS.

Thomasina (Annie), b. Abt. 1855 in Ayr, Ontario; d. January 23, 1888, Ayr, Ontario. Death reg #18116-88 gives age at death as 34 yrs + 2 months + 22 days. Died of neurasthenia of indefinite duration.

Alma Rosa was d/o Andrew & Martha and she was born in Manchester, Ontario in 1856. In the 1881 census they are living in Port Perry with 2 children: Allie R. age 3 and George H. age 1.

Alma Martha, b. November 22, 1877, Toronto; m. William Samuel HAIRE, April 17, 1903, Toronto. Witnesses at wedding: E.L. Lawson & Alma R. Harrington. Both Alma & William were resident of Toronto. In the 1891 census, Alma was called Allie and she was living at home, age 12........ William Haire in 1903 was a tobacconist, and in the 1891 census was living at home, Toronto, lithographer, parents were Samuel HAIRE & Caroline SMITH. William, like his parents, was born in Ireland; he had 3 younger sisters, Jane, Caroline, Marion & Sophia.

George Harrington Abt. 1880, Port Perry, Ontario; d. May 28, 1895, Toronto, buried at mount Pleasant cemetery with his father. George also died of phthisis, which he'd had for 3 years. The physician on his death reg is Dr. A. Jerome Harrington.

In 1871 Joseph's residence is 63 St. Patrick St., Toronto and in 1876 he appears in the Toronto directory as a salesman living at 284 Queen St. West. In 1877 (marriage registration) he was still a salesman. He is buried at Mt. Pleasant cemetery in Toronto, F-5-north gore, but he doesn't seem to have a tombstone. He died of phthisis. Joseph's death reg is 19736-91 and in it his occupation is given as merchant

In the 1891 census, Toronto, D-11, St. James Ward, film T-6371, Rosa is a widow, living with the three children & her brother Charles HARRINGTON, age 27.

John, b. 1849, Ontario; d. 1929, bur at Ayr, Ontario; m. Mary Rose Ann O'SHANAHAN, 1881, Toronto, Ontario. Witness at marriage: A.William HOLMES & Margaret Ellen O'SHANAHAN, both of Toronto. Both John & Mary Rose were resident of Toronto at the time of the marriage. Mary Rose was born in Medonte, Simcoe Co. in 1858, the daughter of John & Ann. Mary Rose had a sister Margaret.

In the 1876 Toronto directory, John was a printer, living at 284 Queen St. West (same address as brother Joseph). In the 1881 census he was living with his mother, and his occupation was printer.

George F., b. Abt. 1852; d. June 08, 1919 at 526 Markham St., Toronto of cancer of the larynx from which he suffered for 1 year. He is buried at Ayr cemetery. The physician at time of death was a Dr. Harrington (reg# 4194-1919) and George's occupation is given as clerk. In 1876 George appears in the Toronto Directory at English shoe store, 284 Queen St. West (again, same as brothers). George married Minnie CAIGER who was born in 1856 and who died in 1939 (buried at Ayr). In 1921 Minnie was a widow, living at 526 Markham St., Toronto (Toronto Directory). In the 1881 census George & Minnie are living in Port Perry with George's brother Joseph.

George Weston WRIGLEY, Toronto Globe, 5 Aug., 1944

George Weston Wrigley, business journalist, and founder of Wrigley Publications Ltd., died today at his home, Kingsway Cres. Born at London, Ontario in 1875, Mr. Wrigley learned his trade as a printer at the London Advertiser. He moved to Toronto in 1894 and was associated with his father, George Wrigley, publisher of the Farmers Son, organizer of the Patrons of Industry movement and of Citizen & Country, a weekly.

After his marriage in 1902 to Miss Edith Eleanor ROBINSON of Toronto, he spent several years on the staffs of publications in Victoria, Vancouver and Wallace Idaho. In 1905 he joined the staff of the Macleans Publishing Co. as editor of Hardware & Metal. Ten years later he became general manager of H. Ganglier LTD (Consolidated Press). In 1919 he founded his own company.

Mr. Wrigley has been vice-president of the Toronto Advertising Club, chairman of the BBB, president of the Canadian Business Publishers Assoc. and a national director of the Periodical Publishers assoc. He was a member of the old Toronto Wanderers Bicycle Club and in recent years was a director of the Islington & Royal York Golf Clubs.

Surviving are his widow, one daughter, Mrs. Gordon GALBRAITH, and one son, George Bernard WRIG:EY, all of Toronto. Two brothers, S. Edward Wrigley of Winnipeg & Roy Wrigley, president of Roy Wrigley Printing & Publishing Co Ltd., Vancouver.

Death of Mrs. Wrigley (The Ayr News, Thurs. 26 Jan., 1905)

The death occurred in Ayr on Sunday morning of Isabella STODDARD, relict of the late Sylvanus WRIGLEY, at the ripe old age of 84 years. The deceased was a native of New York state and came when only a child to this country. The family took up land between Galt and Glenmorris in North Dumfries, and have lived in the township, with the exception of a few years in Ayr, continuously. The husband, Sylvanus WRIGLEY, a sturdy pioneer, who died some years ago, was one of the best known and most highly esteemed farmers in the district. For seventeen years he ably filled the office of collector of the township. The Late Mrs. WRIGLEY was a consistent member of the Baptist denomination. She was a lady of quiet, unassuming demeanor, but possessed rare faculties of mind and qualities of disposition which earned for her the admiration and love of a wide circle. She was kind and charitable, a good neighbour, an admirable wife and the devoted mother of five children, of whom four are alive: Archibald of Corunna Michigan; George of Winnipeg, the well-known newspaper man formerly editor of the 'Farmers Sun', Toronto; Joseph, the respected township clerk; and Margaret, the daughter at home. The fifth, a daughter, Annie, passed away twenty years ago. All who enjoyed the acquaintance of the deceased lady unite in speaking her praises and the universal sentiment is the she has gone to enjoy well-earned rest and reward, after of life of true and exemplary womanhood. The funeral took place to Ayr cemetery on Tuesday afternoon.

Many who for the last time shook hands with this gentleman at the close of the last Insurance meeting in Ayr could not but think of the words - "I'm wearing awa', Jean". He had been a sufferer for years from chronic rheumatism and although his life was spared past the allotted span of man's life, yet were his days for many years but those of patient suffering. Mr. WRIGLEY was born near Manchester, England, and came with his family to Canada in 1826. His father took up the farm in Dumfries now known as "Wrigley's Corners" on which Mr. Joseph WRIGLEY, late Reeve of North Dumfries, Warden of the County, and now clerk of the Township, resides. There he spent over fifty years of his life, discharging during that time many positions of trust and responsibility, having held the position of of Tax Collector of the Township for nearly twenty years. About twelve years ago, Mr. WRIGLEY retired from his farm, to Ayr, where he has since resided, enjoying as well as his ailments would allow, the rest he had so well earned.

In 1844 he married Miss Isabella STODDARD, who survives him. This lady he met after his release from jail in Hamilton, he having been incarcerated for a supposed participation in the McKenzie rebellion of 1837. Strangely enough, Mr. WRIGLEY and a friend were entrapped into sleeping on board the "Caroline" the night she was attacked and sent over the Falls. However, Mr. WRIGLEY was released on bail, without trial, and no further action was taken against him. Thier family consisted of three sons and two daughters, viz: Mr. Archiabald WRIGLEY of Michigan; Mr. George WRIGLEY now publisher of the Drumbo Record, and Mr. Joseph WRIGLEY to whom we have before referred; Miss Margaret WRIGLEY; his second daughter having died last year. Mr. WRIGLEY was interred in the beautiful cemetery in Ayr on Wednesday last, his remains being followed to thier last resting place by a large concourse of his old friends.

Mrs. Gavin Fleming (unknown newspaper)

This lady, widow of the late Gavin FLEMING, for many years the respected member of the House of Commons for North Brant, died on Monday evening last, having almost reached her 68th year. It has been known for some time that her health was seriously affected, but it was only lately that it became evident that her useful life was about to close. Mrs. FLEMING was a daughter of the late Mr. James LAPRAIX, a mason by trade, who came here from Scotland. Mr. LAPRAIX married Miss STODDARD, a daughter of Archibald STODDARD, who had settled with his son George on the farm on the east river road, now owned by Messers. OLIVER, just below the foot bridge. About 1828 Mr. LAPRAIX bought the farm abutting on German's dam, which is now owned by Mr. Alex CARRICK. He resided on the farm for about twenty-eight years, when his family being grown up and age coming on, he retired from the farm and took up residence in Glenmorris, where he lived to attain the extreme age of 92 years. Mrs. LAPRAIX died about 1840. They had nine children, five sons and four daughters, of whom the death of Mrs. FLEMING leaves but two living; Mrs. Wm McGARVEY of Doon and Mrs. David HAY of Goderich. Mr. Wm LAPRAIX, her brother, who had many friends here, went to California and was quite successful, but died some years ago. Mrs. FLEMING was born on the farm near German's Mills and after her marriage took up her residence with her husband in Glenmorris, residing there and in that neighbourhood all of her life. Of her children, four sons are living, John of San Diego Calif., James of San Bernadino Calif., William of Glenmorris and George of Brandon Manitoba. A most worthy woman in every walk of life, deep regret will be felt in a wide circle when her death is learned. To allow of her sons from California reaching here, the funeral has been delayed until half-past ten o'clock tomorrow, Saturday morning.

Death of Mrs. Walter White, Lowell Journal (Michigan) of 3 May 1882

Died at her home in Vergennes, Apr. 30th, Mrs. Walter White, after a brief illness, aged 70 years. She leaves a husband, one son and two daughters -Otis White, Mrs. A.S. Lamberton of Alton and Mrs. D. Keeney of Grand Rapids -to mourn her loss. Mrs. White has been a faithful member of the Christian church for many years but on account of feeble health has been unable to attend worship regularly for some time. The family have the sympathies of their large number of neighbors and friends. Funeral services at the Alton church on Tuesday at 2 o'clock, p.m. Rev. Mr Mudge, officiating.

Walter White , Lowell Journal (Michigan) of 22 Nov 1882

Died in Vergennes, Mich. , Wednesday Nov. 15th,1882, Deacon Walter White, at the advanced age of 75 years. He leaves one son and two daughters, besides a large circle of relatives and friends to mourn his departure. His funeral was attended at the Christian Church at Alton, Nov. 18th, by a large concourse of sympathizing friends. Text --James 4:14.

Uncle Walter -as he was familiarly known -was born May 29th, 1807 in the town of Western, Oneida Co, N.Y. Moved with his father to Dumfries, Canada West in 1819. Was married to Sarah F. Wrigley Dec 31st, 1829, with whom he lived over 21 [should be 51] years, she having passed over the river only six short mos. before him. He embraced religion together with his wife in 1830 and united with the Christian Church and served in the capacity of Clerk until their removal to Mich. in 1846, when they settled on their farm where they have since lived for over 36 years. When they removed to Vergennes they transferred their membership to the Vergennes Christian Church where he served as Deacon from that time until his death, having in the meantime served the Town as Justice of the Peace two terms and P. M. [Postmaster] 18 years, and has ever been found faithful in his post of trust. In his business he was thrifty without parsimony, and though not of large wealth, always practiced the most generous hospitality, his home ever being the resting place for relative, friend, neighbor or stranger. In his family relations he was a devoted husband and father, was loved and revered by his children and children's children. PROMINENT IN DISTRICT: Joseph Wrigley, 85, one of the most prominent residents of the Galt and Ayr district, passed away Thursday at his home near Galt. He had served nine years on the North Dumfries council and was one time Warden of Waterloo County. For 35 years he was Secretary-Treasurer of North Dumfries and during his 44 years service he did not mis a council meeting. He was first Secrretary-Treasurer of the Ayr Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance Company, holding the office for 23 years. He is survived by his widow and one daughter, Mrs. Ernest Apps, Paris. Sylvanus Apps, pole vault star of the recent British Empire Games is a grandson.

At the age of 85, Mrs. Janet Wrigley, died at her residence, 234 Queen Street West. Mrs. Wrigley was born in New York but lived most of her life in Ayr and Toronto, coming to this city 30 years ago. She is survived by 2 sons, Messrs. John & George Wrigley and two grandchildren, Mrs. Harry Champson and Mr. Charles Wrigley. The remains will be taken to Ayr tomorrow for interment.

The death of George F. Wrigley, superintendent of the Consumers' Gasoline Co., occured Sunday evening at his late residence, 526 Markham Street after an illness of some length. Prior to becoming superintendent of the Consumers' Gasoline Supply co., he was a commercial traveller for the Crown Silver Plate Co. He was born in Ayr and has lived in Toronto about 30 years. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Minnie Wrigley. He was a member of the Commercial Travellers' Association and the Ancient Order of United Workmen for some time.

 

Archibald Wrigley Passes Sunday Eve. (Owosso Michigan, newspaper, 1920)

Prominent Retired Farmer Expires Soon After Moving to This City

Archibald Wrigley, one of the most prominent and successful farmers in the county, died at his home on North Ball Street at 8 o’clock last night, after an illness that had confined him to his bed for the past eight weeks. Despite the length of his illness, hope for his recovery was entertained until Sunday morning. Neuritis was the cause of his passing.

Mr. Wrigley was born in Waterloo township, near Galt, Ont., on April 11, 1845. He grew to manhood there and on December 28, 1869, was united in marriage to Miss Eunice Ball at Marshall, Mich. The bridal couple returned to Waterloo township where they lived until 1879. In that year they came to Shiawassee county and purchased a farm southeast of Corunna. There they made their home until this spring, when on May 18, they moved to their new home on Ball street to enjoy the fruits of their years of labor in well earned rest. Hardly had they become settled in their new home, however, before Mr. Wrigley began to fail and eight weeks ago was ordered to his bed.

The death of Mr. Wrigley marks the passing of a man who stood for all that was good and noble in life. He became converted when young and throughout the years of his well rounded life, he has remained steadfast to the tenets of his religion and practiced them in his daily life. He was {illegible} advocate of prohibition in the days when to advocate temperance was to be termed a crank, but his firm belief in the principle was not daunted and he lived to see prohibition grow until it swept the entire country.

He was greatly devoted to his family and home, and with his passing, he leaves his widow and children, a heritage more valued than gold, the memory of a man who was not only a husband and a father, but a companion and a guide, whose daily life was so clean and noble as to be an inspiration. To al who knew him, his name was synonymous with integrity and uprightness.

The deceased always found time, despite his many duties on the farm, to take a keen interest and an active part in community affairs, and was to be found in the front rank of every movement for civic betterment. He had for many years been an active worker in the grange as well as in the farmers’ club.

Mr. Wrigley is survived by his widow and six children. The children are: Rawson Wrigley, Minneapolis; Sylvanus Wrigley, Shiawassee twp; Mrs. Lilah JEFFREY at home; Mrs. Mabel DEIFENDORF, Chicago; Mrs. J. W. DINGWALL, Oakland Calif; and Miss June WRIGLEY at home.

He also leaves one brother, Joseph Wrigley of Ayr Ont., and one sister, Miss Maggie WRIGLEY, of the same place.

The funeral services for Mr. Wrigley will be held at the home, 622 North Ball Street, Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock. Rev Dunning Idle will officiate and burial will take place at Oak Hill cemetery.

Fifty years ago, on January 17th, Joseph WRIGLEY was married to Jane DRYDEN, daughter of the late James DRYDEN and Mary SWAN, daughter of Jared SWAN. The wedding took place at the home of the bride's parents on the ninth concession of North Dumfries, the late Rev. James HOWIE of Guelph, performing the ceremony. Two sisters of Mrs. WRIGLEY were the bridesmaids, Mrs. William H. TAYLOR and Mrs. R.D. CAMERON, and Messers. J.B. DALZELL and John FLEMING of Glenmorris supported the groom. With the exception of John FLEMING, since deceased, all these are still living.

Mrs. WRIGLEY’s paternal grandfather was the pioneer of the DRYDEN family in North Dumfries. She has five sisters and two brothers living, one of the latter, James DRYDEN, having an international reputation as professor of poultry husbandry at the Oregon State Agricultural College.

Joseph WRIGLEY is a descendent of a Lancashire family, his father coming to Canada at an early age with his parents, who settled at the spot now known as Wrigley’s Corners. After completing his education, he took up his life work as a farmer, like his father and grandfather before him, which he successfully followed until some five years ago when he retired to Galt. Mr WRIGLEY has filled many important offices during his career, noticeably in connection with the North Dumfries Council, which he entered in 1880, retiring in July 1924, a period of 45 years. He served as a councilor for five years, as deputy-reve for two years, the an reeve for another two years, and finally he was elected warden in 1887. On the completion of his term he was appointed clerk and treasurer of the council, which office he held for 35 ½ years, never missing a single meeting all that time. Mr. WRIGLEY also held the office of secretary-treasurer of the Ayr Farmer’s Mutual Fire Insurance Company for 28 years and was secretary-treasurer of Wrigley’s Corners school board for 18 years.

Mr. and Mrs. WRIGLEY were at home to their friends from 3 to 6 o’clock in the afternoon and from 8 to 10 in the evening in the spacious reception rooms of their beautiful home on the Crescent were thronged with people. Mr. and Mrs. WRIGLEY, assisted by their daughter, Mrs. Ernest APPS of Paris, Mr. APPS, and Mr. DALZELL, received the greetings and congratulations of their friends in the music room which was redolent from masses of beautiful flowers, brought by their many friends, including large bouquets of roses for the North Dumfries Council and the South Water Street Baptist Church.

Refreshments were served in the dining-room, those in charge being Mrs. J.B. DALZELL and Mrs. John TAYLOR, while the Misses Ethel TAYLOR, Marion MELROY and Yvonne APPS waited on the guests, who were received by Mrs. E.C. HAMILL. A number of beautiful gifts were received by Mr. and Mrs. WRIGLEY from members of their family and others.

Mr. and Mrs. WRIGLEY are the parents of Mrs. Ernest APPS of Paris, they are well-known in town and district, and their many friends will join in best wishes and congratulations to the esteemed couple.

GAVIN FLEMING, J.P. and ex-member of Parliament, was born at the Farm of Shieldhill, near Falkirk, Stirlingshire, Scotland, on 5th June, 1826, and is a son of the late John and Margaret Dobbie) Fleming, both of whom came to Canada in 1831, where the former died in 1835, at the age of thirty-five. His widow, who was born in 1803 is still living. On their advent in Canada, they settled on the Governor's road, Brant County, and Mr. Fleming is justly classified among the early adventurous pioneer farmers of the county. Gavin Fleming, our subject, was married, 21st December, 1852, to Margaret Lapraik, a native of Canada, having been born in the County of Brant 18th April, 1817; she was a daughter of James and Janet Lapraik. Mr. and Mrs. Fleming, who are members of the Presbyterian Church, are the parents of five children, of whom four survive, viz.: John (the Postmaster at Glenmorris), James, William and George. Margaret, who was born 31st December, 1865, died 6th March, 1879. Mr. Fleming was educated at Falkirk, Scotland, and came to Canada in 1849. For twenty-six years he was engaged in the mercantile business in Glenmorris. He was treasurer for South Dumfries Township during a term of four years; was made a Justice of the Peace in 1863, and appointed a Commissioner for taking Affidavits in the Court of Queen's Bench in 1870. He was first returned to the Dominion Parliament at the general elections of 1872, was re-elected by acclamation in 1874, and re-elected in 1878; upon the dissolution of Parliament in 1882, he retired from public life. Mr. Fleming when in Parliament was an advocate of a prohibitory liquor law, an elective Senate, a liberal land policy, the enfranchisement of the Indians in the older settled districts of the country, and was in favour of a fair and equitable Reciprocity Treaty.
