Moses SIMMONS
(1812-1850/1860)
It is believed by this researcher that Moses SIMMONS of Lee Co., Georgia is the father of Sarah D. SIMMONS, wife of John W. SHIVER. From the census below, he was born about 1812. His wife, Delilah, was born about 1811.
1850 Federal Census of Lee County, Georgia

There is a family story, told by a descendent of Moses Simmons, Jr. in this census, that says that Sarah's parents were killed in an influenza outbreak, and the children were sent to live with others. Given that Moses Sr. does not show up in the 1860 census, this outbreak apparently occurred between census years.
A Dooly County, Georgia 1860 census record, appears to be connected. It can be found below. A 24-year-old William SIMMONS is living on 3 houses away and is listed on the same page. He is listed as a Farmer, with the Jackson TOMBLIN family (wife Caroline, age 22 and son David, age 2) living with him (all 4 born in Georgia).
