Henry STARR
(1752-1821)

Henry STARR was born abt 1752 probably in Maryland. Researchers are still uncertain as to who is parents are, but there are several possible candidates in the MD/VA area. Linda Sparks Starr has gathered and contributed a detailed compilation on Henry. Henry moved into Georgia in the mid-1780's, which is supported by his appearance in the 1785 tax list of Wilkes County.

If you would like to see Henry's appearances in the tax lists of Wilkes Co., Georgia, and the appearances of other "related" families nearby, please click here. A JPG file of Henry's 1788 land grants in Wilkes County was graciously provided by Norma Starr.

Henry appears to have married three times. His first wife was named Mary and most researchers believe her maiden name to be STEELE, taken from their son's name. However as yet, there is no documented proof that this is the case. He also appears to have married two other times, (2) to Mary MARTIN in Morgan Co., Georgia on 11 Jan 1815 and (3) to Polly JENKINS on 4 Aug 1817. It is believed that the following children however, are all from his first marriage. If you wish to see the children's families and the e-mail addresses of researchers descended from them, please click on the appropriate child's name (only highlighted, underlined names have links).

Children of Henry and Mary (STEELE?) STARR:

  1. Joshua, b. 17 Oct 1778, d. 22 Oct 1822. (Married Fenton MELEAR.)
  2. John Elijah, b. 1780, d. abt. 1837. (Married Hannah TOWNSEND.)
  3. Silas, b. 7 Nov 1782, d. 17 Dec 1857. (Married Elizabeth KAIN.)
  4. Benjamin, b. 29 Jan 1785, d. 21 Dec 1851. (Married Charlotte PINKSTON.)
  5. Samuel Steele, b. 11 Oct 1794, d. 19 Aug 1859. (Married Hannah MELEAR.)
  6. Amelia (There is very little information available on her. Could she be the "Elizabeth" STARR who md. William LUNSFORD on 5 Nov 1812 in Wilkes Co.?)
  7. Asa D., b. ???, d. by 2 Sep 1817. (Married Rhoda WATTS.)
  8. Caleb (No information known about him.)

Henry's last will and testament was filed in Morgan County on 8 Oct 1818 and was probated on 7 May 1821. He leaves everything to his widow, Mary, which only includes 50 acres, his stock and household goods and two slaves. Given that he at one time owned much more than 50 acres, it appears he may have disposed of his estate and divided it among his children prior to his death.

There is currently a fairly active STARR (and allied lines) research group "meeting" via e-mail. If you are interested in joining, or can add any information to the above data, please contact me. Thank you!
