The Dean Family

SHADRICK DEAN and MOURNING

Shadrick DEAN was born about 1745. He married Mourning, probably in North Carolina where their oldest children were born. His sons Shadrick and John were in Jackson County, GA by 1809 where they were found on the Tax List.

  • 3. John DEAN.
  • 4. Thomas DEAN, born 1775, NC; died 1845, Madison County, GA; married 18 June 1798, Orange County, NC, Elizabeth PHILLIPS
  • 5. Frederick (Fred) DEAN; born 1788, NC
  • 6. Jacob DEAN, born 1790 at NC; died 1853; married Joyce PATRICK
  • 7. Eupharance DEAN, born 1795 at GA; married Thomas MOORE, 6 February 1825

Shadrick left a will signed on 15 May 1811 in Jackson Co, GA and proved March 1, 1813 in Jackson County, GA.

Although no records have been found of Shadrick's service in the Revolutionary War, in 1827 Mourning, while living in Gwinnett County with Jacob and Cynthia, drew land as a widow of a Revolutionary War Soldier which is accepted proof for a Revolutionary War Soldier.

THOMAS DEAN and ELIZABETH PHILLIPS

Thomas DEAN, the son of Shadrick DEAN and Mourning, was born about 1775 in North Carolina. He married Elizabeth PHILLIPS who was born in 1779 in North Carolina. They were married 18 June 1798 in Orange County, NC

Children of Thomas DEAN and Elizabeth Phillips were as follows:

  • 1. Jacob DEAN, born 12 November 1804, GA; died 31 October 1882; buried Trinity Methodist Cemetery, Gwinnett Co, GA; married Cynthia MERCER, 17 December 1828, Madison County, GA.
  • 2. Willis DEAN, born 1806; married Keziah FREEMAN, 29 August 1838, Madison County, GA
  • 3. Nancy DEAN, born circa 1808; married Robert I.. HEMPHILL, 3 February 1829, Madison County, GA
  • 4. Jeptha DEAN, born 1812, GA; married Malinda MERCER.
  • 5. Delaney DEAN, born 1814; married James L. HUGHS/HUSE, 21 January 1941
  • 6. Frances DEAN; born circa 1816; married James M. SMITH, 29 July 1833, Madison Co, GA
  • 7. Mahaley DEAN; born circa 1817; married William MERCER, 9 April 1837, Madison Co, GA
  • 8. Thomas Wesley DEAN, born 21 July 1821; died 3 April 1890; buried Jones Chapel Cemetery;

The Thomas Dean family lived not far from Madison Springs, GA, in Madison County, GA. A picture of their home survives although the home was torn down several years ago.

Thomas Dean died in 1845. Elizabeth lived with her son Thomas Wesley until the early 1870s. In the minutes of the Jones Chapel Methodist Church, 2 April 1870, it was requested that an obituary be written for her.

JEPTHA DEAN and MALINDA MERCER

Jeptha DEAN, son of Thomas DEAN and Elizaberh PHILLIPS, was born circa1812 in GA. He married Malinda MERCER, daughter of James MERCER and Sarah, 15 September 1831 in Madison Co, GA. Malinda was born in 1814.

  • 1. William L. DEAN, born 11 May 1832, GA; died 30 January 1900; buried Old Danielsville Cemetery, Danielsville, Madison Co, GA; married Nancy C. HARDMAN, 13 Jan 1870, Madison County, GA
  • 2. Oliver C. DEAN, born 18 Jul 1834, GA; died 8 Nov 1884, GA; buried Bethabara Cemetery, Barrow Co, GA; married Frances C. BERRYMAN, daughter of Wilson Penn BERRYMAN and Nancy SMITH,

  • 5. Elizabeth Jane DEAN, born 14 July 1843, GA; died 8 December 1898; buried Mill Shoal Baptist Church Cemetery, Madison County, GA; married Wilson Penn BERRYMAN, son of Charles BERRYMAN and Nancy BRAGG.
  • 6. Mary M. DEAN, born 1844.
  • 7. Caroline DEAN, born 1847.
  • 8. James M. DEAN, born 1851; married Nancy H. PORTER, 21 December 1869, Madison County, GA
  • 9. Martha E. DEAN, born 1851.

Malinda died sometime before the 1870 census although she is listed as a member of Jones Chapel Methodist Church on the earliest found roll. Jeptha died sometime after the 1870 census.
