Using the Internet for Research

Links to Internet resources

After I entered all the information that I got from my cousin Linda Harvey Kelley, I started wondering how to go about gathering more and how to check the facts that I already had. I discovered many sources on the Internet. I found the genealogical Web pages for Venango County and Crawford County, Pennsylvania. I joined genealogical lists that encouraged interaction with others searching for information in a particular area or for a particular surname.

People on the genealogical list for Baden Württemberg, Germany shared information with me about where to visit and even the location of Täbingen. Since there is a larger town named Tübengen that is located north of Täbingen, many people thought I was just misspelling the name. And, I wasn't sure. But, one person, Nelson R. Souloff, a retired military chaplain, knew the area and gave me a beautiful description of Täbingen. He told me it was located about 12 km northeast of Rottweil.

Using the MapQuest Internet site, I printed an exact map showing how to get to Täbingen. That was when I knew I could visit Täbingen when I went to Germany to see my middle son, Jared. If you divided Germany into quarters, Bittburg, where Jared lived, was in the top of the bottom left quarter and Täbingen (Taebingen) was near the middle of the right side of that quarter. It didn't look too far away. However, it did end up being about a six-hour drive. I believe it well worth the time. In fact, a trip of a lifetime. I wrote about the trip and provided pictures on the following pages: My trip to Täbingen, my Göhring (Ghering) ancestors home town.

Through the Internet, I met a wonderful lady, Joyce Neidich, who has become a good friend and my Venango County researcher. I found her name on the Venango County Free Lookups Web page. Through our email exchanges, we became friends. She has helped me find many people in my Ghering, Crawford, and Baney lines. I heartily recommend Joyce's genealogy research services if you are interested in finding information in Venango County, Pennsylvania.  She is an expert at digging up information in that area.  Click the Stonesearcher link to see how to contact her.

The biggest bonus of all--Joyce found about 50 Ghering pictures at the Venango County Historical Society that were donated by Howard Strawbridge. Howard descended from Christian Ghering, Jr., son of Christian and Christina Ghering. Howard, a newspaper man in Titusville, PA, had typed information and pasted it to the back of each picture. When Howard died, his pictures and genealogical information were donated to the Venango County Historical Society. What a thoughtful thing for Howard's family to do. It is my goal to share these wonderful pictures with as many Ghering relatives as possible.

As a wonderful added benefit, the Internet has put me in touch with distant cousins, such as Linda Harvey Kelley, who I would otherwise not have gotten to know.  Frequent emails allow us to get to know each other in a manner much like a conversation.  Email is wonderful.

I hope this family Web site will let me share with my family some of the information I have put together from all the different resources and various family members.  Here's hoping this will bring my family even closer.
