Ghering, Frederick C.
Titusville Herald, Crawford County, PA, Monday, 24 April 1939, p. 2, c. 2.

Ghering, Frederick C., 34, Shot Himself in Head Evidently Two Weeks Ago
(Note:  It was my grandfather George H. Ghering's belief that Fred got very ill and tried to leave the island. However, he was too ill to canoe across the river.  Both of his canoes were found downstream.  Grandfather believed that emdash.gif (1591 bytes) in desperation, Fred killed himself.  Grandfather and his wife Annie discovered Fred's body.  Grandfather was very sad that they had not visited sooner.  He believed they could have helped Fred get medical help.  A sad story.)

The body of Frederick C. Ghering, 34, who had evidently been dead for two weeks, was found in a shanty on an island in the Allegheny river, about 1 1/2 miles south of Tionesta, at 4:30 Saturday afternoon. A 20-30 rifle lay beside the body and Coroner E.W. Peifer of Tionesta decided the man had shot himself either accidentally or with intent and declared an inquest unnecessary. The body was brought to the F. H. Flanders funeral home in Titusville and will be taken to the Jamison Corners church in Cherrytree township this afternoon, where services will be held at 3 p.m., with interment in the church cemetery. The body was discovered by George Ghering of Cherrytree township, a cousin, who, with his wife, went to call on the man. They took a supply of provisions for him knowing that he lived alone on the island. A rowboat had to be used to get from the main shore to the island. The cousins were greatly shocked to find the man dead. They have visited him from time to time during the past year, the last time about a month ago, and always found him in good spirits.

Had Kept Diary

The deceased had kept a diary and the last entry was made on Good Friday April 7. There was no mention made that he intended to end his life, just a record of his work for that day. Mr. Ghering was not in want, since there was a good supply of groceries, including two sacks of flour, in the kitchen part of his two-room cottage. In his pocket was found $11.96. Coroner Peifer said evidently the muzzle of the gun had been placed in the man's mouth when it was discharged and the bullet came out the top of his head. He fell forward on his face. Due to the cold nights of the past two weeks, the body was frozen to the floor and had to be pried loose. The tragedy occurred in the room where the man slept.

Born in Cherrytree
Mr. Ghering was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Lowrey Ghering and was born in Cherrytree township on June 4, 1904. He spent his entire life in Cherrytree township, until about a year ago. He then went to Tionesta, where he purchased the island from George E. Robinson. He erected the cottage on the plot, raising the foundation high enough not to be bothered by high water. He hunted, fished and trapped and was an occasional visitor in the borough. He evidently was fond of solitude and this is given as the reason for his hermit life on the island. His father died about five years ago. The deceased leaves one sister, Mrs. Ruth Mitten, of New York City.

THOMAS M. GHERING THROWN FROM LOAD OF TIES AND KILLED

Fatal Accident Happened Yesterday Morning, Body Not Being Found Until Afternoon

Thomas M. Ghering, aged about fifty years and one of the best known farmers in Cherrytree township, was probably instantly killed at about 9 o'clock yesterday morning when the load of ties he was hauling from his farm near the Jamison Corners church to Shaffer farm, overturned on the highway about a mile from his home, and he was thrown forcibly against a rock in the ditch. His neck was broken by the force of the fall. The body was not found until between 4 and 5 o'clock in the afternoon, when a neighbor, Mr. Gigone, found it lying in the ditch. Mr. Ghering had been drawing ties to the P.R.R. at Shaffer farm, which is about midway between Miller Farm and Pioneer, and he started shortly before 8 o'clock yesterday morning with a load. Mrs. Ghering left her home for a neighborhood visit soon after her husband started and she did not return until about 4 o'clock.

Wife Becomes Alarmed
Mrs. Ghering became alarmed when she found that her husband had not been home, and after searching at the barn and not locating him, notified Mr. Gigone and other neighbors. A search was started and Mr. Gigone found the dead man and his team beside the highway about a mile east of the Ghering home. Coroner J. W. Osneider of Oil City was notified and after making an investigation decided that Mr. Ghering met his death purely through an accident, and declared an inquest unnecessary. The body was removed to the home at Jamison Corners and prepared for burial. An examination disclosed a bad cut on the forehead where Mr. Ghering struck the rock in the ditch.

Highway in Poor Repair
The cross road over which Mr. Ghering was hauling the ties is not frequently traveled and there are places where the road bed is in a dangerous condition. It was at one of these places that the accident happened. Mr. Ghering was evidently attempting to drive around a bad place in the highway, when his load of ties tipped over throwing him to the ditch and killing him. The ties did not fall on Mr. Ghering although the wagon was bottom upward. The team did not run away and had stood quietly attached to the overturned wagon all day. The tragic death of Mr. Ghering cast a gloom over the neighborhood because he had spent practically all of his life in Cherrytree township and was held in high esteem by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife and son, George H. Ghering at home, two brothers, C.F. Ghering and G. L. Ghering both of Cherrytree township and two sisters, Mrs. J. M. Hamilton of Glyndon, and Mrs. J. N. Holder of Chapmanville. His mother, Mrs. Amanda Ghering also survives and there are two grandchildren. He was united in marriage with Louisa Chandler about 30 years ago and for nearly all that time he was a member to the Free Methodist church. No arrangements for the funeral had been made last evening.
