John Stoner's Letter To Brother W. Jacob

This is John Stoner's letter to his brother W. Jacob about the death of their father Frederick Stoner on March 25th, 1835. The address reads: "W. Jacob Stoner, Harlinsburg, Mercer County, Pa."

Friday, March 27th 1835

Dear Brother -- It becomse my painful duty to inform you of the decease of our Dear Father. He expired on Wednesday morning, 25th, at half past 5 o-clock and was intered yesterday at 10. He was very low for the last 10 days taking very little nourishment and for the last 3 or 4 days none at all-- the pains continued and he was obliged to be moved every few minutes until the last 12 hours when he lay quite without motion and expired without a groan or struggle-- he retained his senses and knew every one to the last-- his speech had in a great measure failed him for some time but he retained his sight and hearing.

This (?)sation has cast a gloom over the family and friends although the event was (?) for for months past. We are all well excepting Brother Christian's youngest girl who has the measles but getting better. This is pretty general over the country and in many cases motal.

Yours affectionately, John Stoner
