Speed Craze Claims Life

John H. McClelland, Honored Citizen, Struck and Killed By Automobile

OLD STORY OF PASSING STREET CAR

"As the result of injuries sustained Wednesday evening at 6:15 o'clock, when he was struck by an automobile at the corner of Park and Highland avenues, John H. McClelland of 1119 Croton avenue, died at 5 o'clock Thursday morning at the Shenango Valley hospital.

Mr. McClelland, who was head of the firm of J. H. McClelland and Son, was in the grocery business at the corner of Croton avenue and Cascade street. He was widely known, and had run for county commissioner at the last election. . . . .

Driver Ignores Streetcar

A street car was going north on the east track on Highland avenue, and Mr. McClelland stepped out from behind the car, just as the machine driven by Mr. Lang came down on the other side of the street. Eye witnesses say that Mr. McClelland seemed to double up into a ball, as he was struck, and that he was thrown about ten feet or more. Mr. Lang did not succeed in stopping his machine until it had gone about 200 feet, being in front of the Withers apartments when he came to a standstill. A crowd collected quickly, and Rice's ambulance was called and took the injured man to the hospital. It was found that one leg had been broken, and he had been injured internally. . . . .

An epidemic of automobile accidents seems to have struck the city recently, and in addition to those that have occurred, many others have been averted narrowly. Many North Hill residents are indignant over the way automobile owners speed on Highland avenue. The circumstances surrounding last night's accident will be investigated carefully. . . . .

He is survived by his wife and the following children: Herbert L., John C., Floyd, Charles, William and Mae, all of the Third ward; W.E. of Harlansburg, Mrs. Laura Brockway of Greenville, and Mrs. Edna Marshall of Falls street. One brother, James McClelland, resides on West Washington street.

The funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 1 o'clock, at the residence, 1119 Croton avenue. Services will be held at the Harlansburg church at 2:30 o'clock. Interment will be made in Harlansburg."
