To send messages to the Hollister list, no matter whether you are subscribed in mail mode or digest mode, use the following address:

Hollister-L@rootsweb.com

You must turn off html before you send your message, as Rootsweb does not accept messages in html -- they will be returned to you without going to the list. If you find that you have a problem sending messages to the list, there are two things to check. First, check that you are using the proper address. DO NOT send messages intended for the list to Hollister-L-request; you must use Hollister-L@rootsweb.com instead. Second, check to see that the e-mail address under which you subscribed to the list is the same e-mail address from which you are trying to send your message. The use of aliases is one possible cause for problems experienced in sending messages.

Contact the List Administrator:

My name is Mary D. Taffet, and I am the former list administrator for the Hollister-L and Hollister-D surname lists. To contact the current list administrator, Cathy Hollister, write to hollister-admin@rootsweb.com.

My lineage:

John Hollister & Joanna Treat > John Hollister & Sarah Goodrich > Joseph Hollister & Ann Burnham > Timothy Hollister & Lucretia (surname unknown) > Isaac Hollister & Elizabeth Newcomb > Josiah Hollister & Mary 'Polly' Winchell > Hannah Hollister & Samuel North (my Hollister line ends here, but my line continues with North > Mathews > Boice, etc.)

-----------------------

Origin of the Hollister family:

The Hollister family comes from England. John Hollister immigrated to Weymouth, Massachusetts, circa 1643. He moved to Wethersfield, Connecticut, circa 1644, but had apparently been there prior to 1644. He died in Wethersfield in April of 1665. It appears that the Hollister family in America must all be descended from this one immigrant. There may very well be other Hollister immigrants, but I know nothing about them. If you do, please let me know.

Surname Variants:

A surname variant is one where the name is spelled differently but nevertheless refers to the same family. In some cases variants exist because of errors made by persons transcribing handwritten records (I don't have any examples of this for Hollister). In some cases variants exist because census takers or other persons wrote a name the way it sounded, rather than the way it should be spelled (I don't have any examples of this for Hollister). Lastly, surname variants exist because people, from time to time, choose to change the way their name is spelled (I don't have any examples of this for Hollister).

Known variants of the Hollister surname include:

If you know of any surname variants, please send them to me at mdtaffet@twcny.rr.com, with an indication of the circumstances under which they appeared.
