To send messages to the MOSES list, no matter whether you are subscribed in mail mode or digest mode, use the following address:

MOSES@rootsweb.com

You must turn off html before you send your message, as Rootsweb does not accept messages in html. If you find that you have a problem sending messages to the list, there are two things to check. First, check that you are using the proper address. DO NOT send messages intended for the list to MOSES-request or MOSES-D-request; you must use MOSES@rootsweb.com instead. Second, check to see that the e-mail address under which you subscribed to the list is the same e-mail address from which you are trying to send your message. The use of aliases is one possible cause for problems experienced in sending messages.

-----------------------

Origin of the Moses family:

First, let me say that there is not one single Moses family, but many different Moses families that came from many different countries and settled in America and other locations as well. Some of the earliest lines that came to America were from England. Other early lines came from Ireland, Wales and Germany. Still other lines came from Holland, Switzerland, Romania, Scotland, France, and other locations as well.

I have a theory that all Moses lines were at one time located in Spain and were Jewish. They got kicked out of Spain around 1492 and dispersed throughout Northern and Western Europe. Some adopted other religions as they traveled. While some Moses immigrants to America were indeed Jewish, others were Lutherans, and additional religions are probably represented as well. Please keep in mind that this is just a theory, with no proof whatsoever. While this theory can never be proven, it could be disproven if records of Moses families can be found in other areas of Europe significantly prior to 1492. For example, if there were Moses families in England around 1350, I would have to acknowledge that this theory is probably false. Until such disconfirming evidence is found, this theory remains just that -- an unproven theory.

Because there are so many different Moses lines with no known connections between them, the MOSES Surname Y-DNA study should ultimately provide us with some answers as to which of the various lines might actually be connected to each other. See the Moses Surname DNA Website (http://home.earthlink.net/~mosesm/index.html) for more information.

Surname Variants:

A surname variant is one where the name is spelled differently but nevertheless refers to the same family. In some cases variants exist because of errors made by persons transcribing handwritten records where the variant is close enough to the original to not be considered a real error (I have seen MOSES transcribed as MOSSES and MOSER). In some cases variants exist because census takers or other persons wrote a name the way it sounded, rather than the way it should be spelled (I don't have any examples myself, but I know it happened). Lastly, surname variants exist because people, from time to time, choose to change the way their name is spelled (I also do not have any examples for MOSES, but I know this happened with other surnames).

Known variants of the MOSES surname include:

On the other hand, quite often there are transcription errors which represent the Moses surname as something else completely different which isn't close to the original at all. I don't consider these to be true surname variants, but rather erroneous transcriptions. Observed erroneous transcriptions of the MOSES surname include (in alphabetical order):

If you know of other surname variants or erroneous transcriptions, please send them to me at mdtaffet@twcny.rr.com, with an indication of the circumstances under which they appeared.
