What is The Meriwether Society, Inc.?

The Meriwether Society, Inc. (TMSI) is a hereditary organization established by descendants of Nicholas Meriwether I (abt 1631-1678). Almost all known Meriwethers in the USA through the mid 1800's are believed to have descended from Nicholas. Many prominent families of early Virginia, including Anderson, Barker, Bartee, Bathurst, Browne, Burnley, Bushrod, Cabell, Clemens/Clements, Cochran/Cochrane, Crafford/Crawford, Dabney, Fauntleroy, Holmes/Hoomes, Howard, Jefferson, Kendall, Lee, Lewis, Logan, Mathews, Minor, Oglesby, Overton, Pollard, Randolph, Smith, Syme, Taliaferro, Terrell, Thornton, Walker, Washington, Wayles, Wingfield, etc. have ties to Meriwethers.

The Society’s Goal is:

To seek out and preserve the history of the Nicholas Meriwether I family in America and in the process encourage pride, communication, reunion, and camaraderie among his living descendants, recognizing their common heritage.

To further this goal, the Society:

• Conducts an Annual Meeting, with a major Reunion held concurrently every odd numbered year. CLICK HERE FOR DETAILS ON THE 2013 REUNION!

• Sponsors research in the United States and Great Britain seeking to discover the roots of the Nicholas Meriwether family.

• Organizes Family Group and Regional Representatives to assist members in research.

• Publishes Meriwether Connections, the premier family organization newsletter that is the official publication source for Meriwether Society-sponsored and voluntary contributions.

For more information on Nicholas I himself, please see his entry under Family Groups in the Resources section.
