Born on 20 Apr 1845 in Queensbury, Warren, NY. Died on 10 Nov 1918 in Kingston, Ulster, NY. Buried on 13 Nov 1918 in Woodside Cemetery, Dumont, NJ. Occupation: Tinsmith.
Edward Root served with the 2nd NY Cavalry during the Civil War: 6 Sep 1863 - 8 Nov 1865.
Supposedly, he liked to tell the story that he was only sixteen years of age and legally too young for service, but that he increased his age for the benefit of the recruiting officer. We now know he was eighteen at the time of his enlistment. Because of his short height, he was at first rejected, but he returned to the end of the line and was accepted on the second try.
A wealthy relative traveled 200 miles on learning of his enlistment and tried to talk him out of it, and finally offered to pay $300 for a substitute to take his place. When all persuasion failed, the irate relative went home, and Ed Root was still in the Army.
After leaving the Army, Edward Root served as Vice Commander of Charles A. Summer Post, Grand Army of the Republic, New York City. He established his own business as a tinsmith on 10th Ave. in NYC, and later built a home on Niagara Street in Dumont, NJ.
The old soldier marched in Decoration Day (now Memorial Day) parades in Dumont until finally the time came when the effort was too much. When invited to ride in a carriage in the parade, he replied, 'When a soldier can't march, it's time he stood to home.' On Decoration Day thereafter, he put on his Grand Army uniform, but refused to leave the front porch.
Among the personal effects handed down:
E. B. Root's diary, hand-written family history, marriage certificate, G.A.R. pin and medals, several photos, and the discharge papers. An article about E. B. Root appeared in the 27 May 1961 edition of
