32 John MERKLEE.
Born on 14 May 1808 in probably New York, NY. Died on 18 Mar 1888 in Brooklyn, Kings, NY. Buried in Cypress Hills Cemetery, Brooklyn, NY. Occupation: Jeweler, produce merchant.
John Merklee was a jeweler who later became a prominent merchant at New York City's famous Washington Market. The 1850 U.S. Census shows John and his family residing in New York City at 10 King Street, between Macdougal and Smith. This area was then the 8th Ward of Manhattan. The Merklees' two-story frame dwelling on King Street was razed to make way for the construction of Sixth Avenue. It was one of two frame houses in a longer row of brick Federal-style structures.
Also shown living in the Merklee household at that time were a Mr. C.A. Burnett (possibly John's bother-in-law), born in Connecticut, age 52; James A. McGee, a clerk, age 22, born in New York, and an Ann Kiley, age 23, born in Ireland. Ann Kiley probably was employed as a servant. Years later, another Irish servant girl who worked in the Merklee home, Catherine Mackin, would marry John's son, Andrew. James McGee would later marry John's daughter, Elizabeth. By 1852-53 the Merklees were living in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Perhaps they chose this section of Brooklyn because of its close proximity to lower Manhattan where their business was located. At that time, ferries operated between Brooklyn and Manhattan.
John purchased the family burial plot in Cypress Hills Cemetery, Brooklyn, on 11 Feb 1850.
