8640 Valentine PRENTICE.
Born abt 1561. Died aft 1605.
Felsted church records in Essex County identify a Valentine Prentice who married Marie Luke, "widdow," on 15 Jan 1586. Whether Valentine is the son of John Prentis and Elizabeth is less clear. If it is assumed that he was at least 25 years old at the time of his marriage to a widow, his birth date would have been not later than 1561. Felsted church baptism records cover the period 1570 - 1615 and do not record his baptism or the identity of his parents.
It is doubtful that he is the Valentine mentioned in William Prentis' 1574 will: it seems probable that the Valentine mentioned in that will died in 1598. The will of the Valentine Prentis who died in 1598 does not mention any of the Felsted children as would be expected if they were his from a previous marriage.
There are reasons to think this Valentine Prentice is the son of John and Elizabeth, none of which are conclusive seperately, but cumulatively suggest that conclusion:
1) Since he named his first two children John and Elizabeth, one could infer that those were the names of his parents;
2) The name Valentine Prentice is so unique it likely fits within only a family unit which, in this instance, would be descendants of William Prentis;
3) In naming his 1599 son, the Felsted Valentine selected the name Valentine the very next year after the death of the Valentine Prentis in 1598, who was possibly his uncle. Besides carrying forward his own first name, it might have been a way of honoring that possible uncle.
4) The will of the Valentine who died in 1598 does not mention a son named Valentine.
He married Marie LUKE, on 15 Jan 1585/86.

8641 Marie LUKE. Born abt 1565. Died aft 1605.
8644 Francis NICHOLS. Died in 1650 in New London, New London, CT.
The lineage of Francis Nichols is still unresolved. Some thought he was a brother to Col. Richard Nichols of New York, and both sons of Francis Nichols and Margaret Bruce, for they did have a son named Francis. However, examination of records at the Guildhall Genealogy Library in London, which had a copy of Col. Richard Nichol's will of 1672, clearly recited the death of his brothers, "Edward and Francis, the one dead at The Hague, the other at Paris during the late usurpation." that would seem to resolve the matter: Richard would know where his brother Francis died. This Francis, of course, died in New London and not in Europe. There was also a copy of Margaret (Bruce) Nichols' will (she was Richard's mother) of 26 June 1651, leaving all her effects "to the relieve" of her son, "Francis." She would not be referring to this Francis (the grandfather of Hester Nichols) because he apparently died a year earlier, in 1650. Hence, she doubtless refers to Richard's brother, Francis, who died in Paris or The Hague after 1651 and before 1672.
