33G Grandparents (Continued)

47815140038 Charles II.  Born on 13 Jun 828 in Frankfurt-am-Main. Died on 6 Oct 877 in near Mt. Cenis in the Alps. Title: King of the Franks (840-877), Emperor (25 Dec 875-877).

Also known as Charles the Bald. The efforts of his father, Louis I, to create a kingdom for Charles were responsible for the repeated revolts of Louis's elder sons that disturbed the latter part of Louis's reign. When Lothair I, the eldest and heir to the imperial title, attempted to reunite the empire after Louis's death (840), Charles and Louis the German marched against their brother and defeated him at Fontenoy (841). Reaffirming their alliance in 842, they signed (843) with Lothair the Treaty of Verdun, which divided the empire into three parts. The part roughly corresponding to modern France fell to Charles. He was almost continuously at war with his brothers and their sons, with the Norsemen (or Normans, as they came to be known in France), and with rebellious subjects. When Charles's nephew Lothair, son of Lothair I and king of Lotharingia, died in 869, Charles seized his kingdom but was forced by the Treaty of Mersen (870) to divide it with Louis the German. In 875, at the death of his nephew Louis II, who had succeeded Lothair I as emperor, Charles secured the imperial crown. His reign witnessed the growth of the power of the nobles at the expense of the royal power and thus marked the rise of local feudalism. Charles's chief adviser was Archbishop Hincmar.

He fought with his father against the Danes. At Alfred's death (899) Edward's succession was disputed by his cousin Æthelwold, who allied himself with the Danes of Northumbria and East Anglia. The death of Æthelwold in battle (902) put an end to that war, but later fighting with the Danes recommenced. Aided by his sister ÆthelflĪd, Lady of the Mercians, Edward undertook a series of advances against the Danes, systematically building fortresses to cover his positions. At the same time he repelled Viking attacks on the shore of England. After ÆthelflĪd's death (918) he asserted his full authority over Mercia and thus became ruler of all England S of the Humber River. He was also accepted as overlord by several Welsh rulers and by English Northumbria, and he is supposed to have received the submission of Constantine II of Scotland. The right of the overlordship of Scotland, based on Edward's position, was asserted by later English kings. Edward was succeeded by his son Athelstan. Two other sons, Edmund and Eldred, also ascended the throne.

Heer's Charlemagne & His World, p. 226, show's Otto's wife as the illegitimate daughter of Arnulf, King of Germany, Emperor (ca. 863-899), and Oda of Bavaria; Arnulf was the son of Carolman, King of Bavaria (ca. 828-880) and Litwinde; Carolman was the son of Louis II "the German," King of the East Franks (ca. 805-876) and Emma of Bavaria; Louis II was the son of Louis I "the Fair," Emperor (814-840). Brandenburg shows no such daughter for Arnulf. Isenburg shows Hedwig as the daughter of Heinrich, Markgraf of the Netherlands (d. 886). Saillot say's Otto's wife was Hedwig, daughter of Henri, Comte de la Marche. Moriarty says Hedwig died 24 Dec 903 but does not identify parents.
