He and his son are both called, in Welsh sources, "the Treacherous." Welsh pedigrees make him a son of Dyfnwal Hen, allegedly of the line of Ceretic Guletic, regarded by later Welsh writers as an important ruler in northern Britain. According to Welsh sources, his wife was Lleian, daughter of Brychan, the ruler who gave his name to Brecknock.

Cynric of Wessex ruled as king of Wessex from 534 to 560. He was either the son or grandson of Cerdic. Among the few statements made about his life were that he captured Searobyrig or Old Sarum, near Salisbury, in 552, and that in 556 he and his son Ceawlin won a battle against the Britons at Beranburh, now identified as Barbury Camp.

Apparently briefly king of Dalriada in Scotland, at an uncertain date for a short time following his father's death. According to the
Book of Leinster (12th century) and the
Book of Ballymote (14th century), he married Feldelm Foltchain, daughter of Brion, son of Eochaid Mugmedon. Brion was a half-brother of the famous Niall of the Nine Hostages. This marriage is in good agreement with the revised chronology of Carney (
Studies in Irish Literature and History) for the 5th century, which puts the death of Niall at about 542 C.E. and the death of Patrick about 490 C.E.
He married Feldelm Foltchain.

Cerdic was a Saxon earldorman who founded a settlement at Hampshire, England in 495. He assumed the title of King of the West Saxons in 519, and became the ancestor of the English royal line. Some genealogies have him as father of Creoda, who would then be the father of Cynric.
