2006-2007 Meeting Schedule
- September 2006 -- NO MEETING
- Because there is no October Family History Fair in NYC this year (they couldn't get a space), and 1st Tuesday in Sept is the day after Labor Day, our first meeting of the 2006-2007 season is now scheduled for October.
- Tuesday, 3 October 2006, 6:00-8:00 pm
- Topic: Tracing Living Relatives Using the Internet. We'll get a look at how to use free search routines and sites (Google, Yahoo, etc) and commercial databases (Ancestry, WhitePages, Historic Newspapers, etc) and commercial search firms (used by police, private investigators, and employers) to quickly get information on almost anyone who has lived in the United States (and other western countries) in the last 50 years. Bring your information on missing family folk and we'll see if we can't put out some tracers during the program.
- Tuesday, 7 November, 2006, 6:00-8:00 pm
- Topic: "Producing OVERSIZE Family Charts"
Learn the tricks and tips of putting together clear, custom designed wall charts of your entire family tree from standard genealogy software. Go beyond the cut & paste of 8.5" x 11" (or even 11" x 17") paper. Your families will love it! We'll also get a quick look at the new Family Tree Maker 16.
- Tuesday, 5 December, 2006
- Topic: "New Software - New Tricks"
We'll get a look at the new Family Tree Maker 16 and its on-line research tools. We'll also get to see the competing utilities in Legacy Family Tree, And talk a bit about new functionality and treasures in The Master Genealogist. This is a great opportunity to see and hear some of the differences between three of the more popular genealogy software packages currently on the market.
- Tuesday, 9 January, 2007 - NOTE: second Tuesday (due to new year conflict)
- Topic: "Cultural Clues to Genealogy"
"Genealogy and family history does not have to be a dry-listing of vital statistics. Most of us have interesting stories, images, and/or inherited possessions of ancestors and relatives. These stories, personal childhood memories, photographs, table or cookware, clothes, etc. may provide valuable hints to genealogical researchers. This workshop focuses on analyzing family possessions (pottery, clothing, furniture, photographs, real estate, etc), family legends/rituals/traditions, and personal memories (sights, sounds, smells) for the often overlooked clues to our past generations.
This meeting is not just for beginners it's for experienced researchers as well. There will be a Q & A period after the meeting. Please bring your questions, pictures and/or objects. With both groups attending it should be a wonderful and lively meeting."
RESERVATIONS are a MUST!
