Ceres Mail, Wednessday May 30, 1900 Portville Pointers Portville, May 29. -- At State line Mills on May 19th occured the death of Miss Ella Skiver. She was aged 22 years and had been ill for several months. She was an esteemable young lady and well like by all who knew her. All of her life had been passed in that place. The funeral was held at the house and the interment took place in the Portville cemetery. O.A. Devore, Portville's hustling in- surance agent, was in Smethport on a business mission Friday. Hon. W. E. Wheeler is on a business trip to New York and Boston this week. Max Wolfram of Austin spent Sun- day with his sister, Mrs. Knapp, at Gor- dons. Prof. H. H. Fritts, James Fairchild and Allie Hardy made a trip to Kinzua bridge on their wheels Saturday. Monday was bullhead day at Mill- grove. Mersereau's dam was let off and the coves above were nearly all drained. Men went along the coves with pitchforks and pitched out hun- dreds of bullheads. They were selling them at 10 cents per dozen. B. H. Rice was down from Port Al- legany part of last week. Hotten Bros. loaded another car with potatoes Friday at 22c per bushel. Mrs. C. E. Marskey of Saginaw, Mich., is visiting her mother, Mrs. M. A. Simpson, this week. The mill boys can find plenty of work in the bark woods at good wages until the mill gets in running order again. The pupils in our high school made a very good showing at the March examinations. Not a paper was re- turned. This speaks well for Prof. Fritts and assistants. There are always some funny things happening at a fire. Sunday morning a man was seen running to the mill fire with nothing on but his shirt. Principal H. H. Fritts of the high shcool has been retained for next year by our trustees. You couldn't do better, neighbors. Street Commissioner H------------- W. H. Man------------------------- were up from Olean Sunday. John and Mike Mohan and Mrs. James Sherry were called to St. Marys last week by the death of a brother. Mrs. H. C. Holcomb visited friends in Port Allegany the past week. R. P. Bridgeman and wife of Buffalo spent Sunday in town, guests of H. L. Rice and wife. The Buffalo and Washington flyer on the W. N. Y. & P. railway attracxts a good deal of attention. Mrs. Fred Tarbell of Olean visited among Portville relatives last week. The Matron's contest held in Bed- ford's hall Wednesday evening was a success in every way, and was very well attended. The recitations were all excellent and well rendered, the prize medal being awarded to Mrs. Phoebe Smith of Westons. W. B. Mersereau as chairman of the judges made the presentation with an excellent speech. The musical part of the pro- gram was greatly appreciated by the audience and many thanks are due to those who kndly assisted in making the entertainment a success thus adding to the funds of the W. C. T. U. under whose auspices it was given. Merton Place was in town from Ceres Friday afternoon.
