Barrack Lane, Allihies
(known as Cluin in the 1800's)

The miners that worked in the Mountain Copper Mine near Allihies
lived in rock cottages on Barrack lane and along the road leading
from the village to the mine.

Barrack lane was called that because the police barracks were
at the end of the lane, where the white building is in this picture.

The houses were one room and had dirt floors.
Many miners had large families, and the families lived in one-room houses.
